GB-PVR does not start..

I'm having difficulty getting GB-PVR to start on my media machine. I've tried it on 2 other machines with no problem, but my media machine just won't run it.

Basic stats:
Shuttle mini-atx (Shuttle SN41G2)
Athalon 2400
256 MB RAM
160 + 40 GB drives

Windows 2000 + all patches
.NET platform v1.1
Java platform
MS Office + patches
Typical utility software load

I'm using the S-video output from the NForce to the TV for my monitor, which is about the only difference between my three home machines. The only other difference is NForce vs NVidia AGP cards. I chose the NForce platform to save space & fan noise, since it already had TV-out, 6-channel audio, and 3D-acceleration.

There are three problems I'm running into:
- When in config, and applying new changes, the software throws an exception when restarting the server. This occurs on ALL my machines.

- When starting the config on the media machine, it throws an exception because the Access DB is not the right version (but still appears to work).

- After configuration (tried many options, including different window managers), I launch GB-PVR. On the media machine, it simply doesn't launch. It doesn't show up in the task manager, nor produce any exception dialogs. Just doesn't start.

Anyone else encountered these errors?

This should be moved to the support forum. You didn't mention what capture card you are using. I had some problems with Win2K also, I had to get the latest MDAC from MS. I don't understand what you mean by "different window managers". What exception is it throwing?

- Sorry for posting in the wrong forum, it seemed like a "getting started" problem to me..
- I am not using a capture card.
- MDAC.. good call, I'll try installing those updates tonight.
- Different window managers: VMR9, VMR7, Overlay Manager
- The exception is "Service GB-PVR Recording Service was not found on computer" below is the exception information. Note that ALL of the computers recieve this exception, but ONLY the media machine is not launching GB-PVR, so I believe this is not the whole problem.

From a command prompt, change into the C:\Program Files\devnz\GBPVR directory. Run "installutil GBPVRRecordingService.exe". Then reboot.

Installutil may not be in you path. It'll be in a directory like C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322, so you may need to stick that path in front of the installutil command

If this doesn't work for you, can you see if you have a GBPVRRecordingService.exe.log? If so email it me suppor@devnz.com. Let us know how you get on.

If you aren't using a capture card, then...?? Sorry sort of confused about that. Perhaps that's why it's not working, because you don't have a capture card? Under the GBPVR list, there's config, gbpvr, etc, and there's 2 batch files for starting and stopping the recording service. You might want to try those to stop and start it.

An overlay manager is definitely NOT a window manager. For a minute there I thought you were talking about linux, there's window managers in that

Also I don't quite know what you mean by the "media machine" are you running another machine with the capture card and are trying to stream to this box, or what exactly are you doing?

Your instructions worked perfectly, the service installed correctly and runs fine on my work machine (without reboot even). It solves the exception mentioned. I'll test it on the media machine this evening.

Perhaps some additional explanation would help.. I need a TV-friendly media frontend with integrated music & video interfaces, preferably with support for launching a game emulator menu app. GB-PVR supports all of these features (and more). The extra features (ie: TV recording) is not part of my requirements. Admittedly using a PVR for something other than PVR-ing is a bit obtuse..

My home media network consists of ethernet & stereo plugs in every room. Eventually I would like to use NAS boxes to store music & video libraries in the network with a media machine providing the user interface and streaming services. Each room would have a remote UI box to control the media in that room.

So far, GB-PVR works fine on two W2K machines with NVidia cards (no TV capture) plugged in the AGP slot, outputting to a monitor.

The 'media machine' has slightly different hardware (NForce). It also has a set of services running on it for streaming media. GB-PVR will be running on it as the UI for music/video selection - as soon as I finish the Jukebox plugin.

... which brings us back to my current problem ...

The software works just fine for two other machines, but not the 'media machine' which will be its eventual home. Thus, I conclude that I'm missing some simple software/hardware tweak which should be obvious, but is leaving me stumped.

When you do try to start GB-PVR does it create a "C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\GBPVR.exe.log" file?

I installed MDAC as glassvial suggested, using MDAC 2.8 from microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...layLang=en).

After installation, I ran the installutil as Sub suggested. One reboot later, and it all works flawlessly!

Excellent. Sub you may want to add somewhere that MDAC is required along with the .net framework. A lot of Win2K systems run old versions of MDAC that need to be updated, as you can obviously see by this problem
