My IE9 doesn't seem to have anything for Java there either. Perhaps that's nothing to worry about. I see there's also a "reset everything in ie to defaults" option there. Worth a punt? (perhaps after backing up any bookmarks).

Resetting IE to default settings by going into Internet Options -> Advanced -> Reset has worked for me in similar situations.

Personally I would uninstall all the Java stuff with Revo uninstaller using the advanced option to clear all files and registry settings, then reset IE, then reinstall Java.

I'm not sure how I did it, but I managed to get the java icon in the system tray and also got the console open - now when I run the java test on java.com I even get the spinner thingy spinning - but it just sits there spinning and there's no error showing in the console.

I had spotted the IE reset option and that was something I was planning to try before getting the restore disks out. I've never tried Revo before, but I'll have a look - I see they have a 30 day trial.

Thanks guys... Alex

The free version will do the job just fine. You can get it on ninite.com, that's probably simpler.

Well folks, I followed through on all your suggestions and a few other ideas of my own, but no joy... Sad

Computers have been doing exactly as I've told them for forty years and they are certainly not going to start taking the p!$$ out of me now, so I adopted a different approach...

First I gave it a damn good thrashing with a leafy tree branch - didn't really solve the problem but it felt good...

Then I restored the whole thing from its recovery partition, installed all the apps, installed java, applied all the service and now it's all working fine...Smile

I think it's fair to say that it now definitely knows who the boss is... I don't expect any more trouble...

It didn't fix things for Basil either but there are times it just has to be done. Wink

Good to hear you got it sorted - I've done a few searches for ideas but didn't come up with anything new.
