Just changed over from old analog cable service to digital cable (QAM). Using Hauppage HVR-2250 tuner. I'm getting a picture, but no sound on any channels. I've verified there's sound on the cable by plugging it directly into a TV. Is there a setting I have to change in nPVR to accommodate sound with this change?

Its almost certainly down to either the MPEG Layer II audio decoder or AC3 audio decoder that you're using.

In Settings > Decoders, settings are set as follows:

Audio Renderer: Default

MPEG1 Audio: Disabled

AC3 Audio: Disabled

E-AC3 Audio: Disabled

AAC Audio: Disabled

HE-AAC Audio: Disabled

What's odd (to me) is that none of my old recordings (made before the switch over) are playing with sound. I think I may have changed a setting in an attempt to get it working and not restored it back to how it was set initially.

Can you help me troubleshoot?

Argh! Please disregard my previous posts... it appears to be a problem with my PC sound. Everything works fine through my Popcorn Hour and TV set.

You're not going to get any audio for the types set to 'disabled', which explains your missing audio.

These decoder settings only apply to .ts files, which is what NextPVR records. If you have old recordings of some other type (like .mpg recorded by GBPVR), then these just leave it up to Windows to decided the decoder.

As a test, I made a new recording with the above settings and attempted to play it back. No sound when playing back on the computer, but I do get sound when playing back on my Popcorn Hour and TV. The latter is the most important, of course, but it would be nice to have sound for the occasional show I might watch at my PC. Is this likely to be a setting within nPVR, or should I be looking somewhere in my PC settings? Sound is working otherwise on my PC, so I'm thinking it's something in nPVR?

didn't you read sub's post? You have all your sound decoders set to Disabled, therefore you have no sound (this seems obvious, yes?). For US ATSC/QAM you need a decoder for MPEG1 and AC3. AC3Filter will work for both (http://www.ac3filter.net).

Sorry, yes of course I read sub's post. I guess I'm confused because, as I said, I am getting audio when playing back through my Popcorn Hour. Doesn't nPVR have to be generating/sending audio in order for that to happen? And one of the settings is "Audio Renderer: Default"... I am not knowledgeable enough about all this to know if that is all that is needed for audio.

I will check out the link you provided... thank you!

The decoder settings are only for playback on the PC. Playback on the Popcorn Hour uses it's own internal decoders. If you have those decoders set to 'disabled' then you'll get no audio when playing back a recording on the PC.

Just leave the Audio Renderer on 'default'.

Ah, I didn't realize that... thanks.

I downloaded and installed AC3Filter as johnsonx42 suggested and all is well now. Thank you both for your help!
