3.3.8: app freezes when clicking "Decoders" or "DVD"

Note: this is not specific to 3.3.8; it existed with the previous version too, just now reporting it.

When I click "Decoders" or "DVD" in the NPVR GUI, the app hangs, and I can't even kill it via Task Manager (I have to reboot the machine to get rid of it).

It seems like the one thing these two sections have in common is enumerating the codecs on the system. I've installed the K-Lite Codec Pack, and everything plays fine through Windows Media Player and MPC-HC, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the codecs themselves.

I'm on Windows Server 2012 R2, but I've installed the necessary BDA support (which allowed me to do a successful channel scan of my HDHomeRun Plus).

Happy to help debug...is there a log that might indicate where it's getting hung?

Try clicking Decoders, then post the c:\users\public\npvr\logs\npvr.log and I'll check the log for errors.

It's probably a case of a bad directshow decoder on your machine, leading to problems when NextPVR tries to load the list of decoders.

I've attached it, but it doesn't look like it logs anything before it hangs.

I've also attached a screenshot of the hung window, which never fully renders. NextPVR.exe is "suspended" when I try to kill it, and subsequent attempts to kill it report "access is denied" (even though I'm administrator).

Did you install the prerequisites? http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...requisites

Are you sure that log was from immediately after visiting the Settings->Decoders screen? It looks like you might have restarted the app after that (overwriting the log).

Try this patch too before creating the log, it'll help us narrow it down to what type of decoder it was looking for at the time the error occurred.

Attached with patch running, it looks like it failed on MPEG2:

Quote:2014-10-25 14:27:51.919 [DEBUG][1] Scanning plugin devices
2014-10-25 14:27:54.939 [DEBUG][1] Getting Decoders for type: MEDIATYPE_Video, subtype: MEDIASUBTYPE_MPEG2_VIDEO

Is there any way the app can be closed gracefully when this hang occurs? It's unkillable as is and I have to reboot to restart NPVR.

Yep, looks like it's one of the decoders registered for MPEG2 on your system that is causing the problem.

The app already attempts to handle any errors in this logic gracefully, but in your case it looks like it's going into a Windows call, and never coming back out.

The attached version logs a bit more info, which might help narrow it down further.

If you have any firewall/antivirus software installed, you could try temporarily disabling it, to see if makes any difference. These types of apps intercept API calls, can could be causing issues.
