Poor Picture Quality

Hi, i've read over the forums looking and have been unable to find a fix. (I may just not have looked well enough and if this has been covered my apologies)

im running a Hauppage 150 on P4 2.8 1gig ram using a Ati 9600 128 meg card. i built this system over 2 years ago. I'm running win xp , and direct x 9.c.
I'm using omega drivers (just started tonight to see if they would help to no avail)

Anyway problem is when watching Live Tv If the picture on the screen is still i.e. no movemant the picture quality is great but as soon as a person moves etc the item moving gets "lines" the lines are only on the item moving and seems to make the picture hazy. I've also noticed not sure if this is related but my picture is not bright and crisp its kind of dull and hazy almost like a tv wtih the contrast set way down. I've only run into this problem with GBPVR when i was using beyond tv the quality was fine.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Still a Noob myself but have you tried switching to vmr7 and ditching/reducing any OSD settings? this might help but then I am no expert either

I don't want to speak for Sub but I was under the impression GBPVR is just a front end and the actual playback is handled by something else.

I changed to VMR7 and got a black screen.

Does it look like the picture is breaking up around the edges of the object moving (combing) or is it one line midway through the screen that goes completely across the screen making it look like the top half and bottom half are out of sync (tearing)? Also, are you just outputting to screen or a tv? and which codec are you using?

If it's combing, it's most likely either 1) the decoder you're using. I found PowerSoft to be completely unwatchable for liveTv because of this. I've been switching between InterVideo and DScaler, trying to figure which one works better. or 2) check your deinterlacing setting on the GBPVR misc tab. Set it to encoder pass-through if not already.

If it's tearing and you're using an ATI video card and TV, then it's because there's a problem with ATI cards that causes tearing on the secondary display. Fix is to flip the primary and secondary display (tv as primary, monitor as secondary). Dunno otherwise.

What you're describing sounds like interlacing. See the screen shots at http://www.dscaler.com/screenshots/index.htm for confirmation.

Try setting the deinterlacing setting to 'encoder pass-through'. Alternatively install ffdshow, and configure it to do deinterlacing, then configure GB-PVR to use ffdshow for deinterlacing.

The screen shot you posted is similiar to it. Although its not on as grand a scale as the photo. Mine is more on the edges. then thru the entire object on fast movement.

I changed it to encoder pass-through but it gives an error Object referance not set to an object. i will continue trying what has been suggested.


Also my play back is on my moniter want to work out everything before trying on tv.

Try a different video decoder. Some of them dont seem to like this encoder pass through.

The 2 options i have are Default and Intervideo NonCSS, Both give the error. what others can i use and where can i find them? THanks for all the help.
