I have 4.0.4 8/20 with Tacoma's later patches and the LAV video decoder on my test box. Based on somewhat limited testing, it is better than the 8/20 version without the patches and with the MS DTV decoder on my "production" box. The only problems have been a couple of instances of failing to start the stream in live TV from the guide.
I think the key may be the LAV decoder as Sub says he uses it and 4.0.4 is supposed to work with it. I went back to 3.9.2 with MS decoder for production as the skips in 4.0.4 were too messy. Also, issues with imperfect streams. At this point, I don't see much difference between skipping in the two installations, 4.04/LAV may be a bit faster. I don't use comskip.
