Since were talking about preformace, I have a question. I currently use a box w/256Mb of DDR, But the Mobo can accept SDR or DDR.

I have 512MB of SDR stick's laying around. Would GBPVR work better with 512MB of SDR or 256MB of DDR.

Also, anyone have an opinion on the speed difference between a 950Mhz Athlon and a 1gig Duron? I have the 950Mhz box laying round as well.

I'm guessing there is no big preformace difference between the 950Athlon and the 1000 Duron.

Opinions?
GBPVR Server:

Ok apart from getting a faster CPU....

What other things effect the speed?
Skin complexity? (Would a REALLY simple skin help the MVP?)

Plugins? ( I have MyVideos for the DVD recording & X Record for the disc space reporting)

steves Wrote:Folks,

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve the performance of GB-PVR?

The problem is I'm using GBPVR exclusively thru an MVP and on a very low powered box (800Mhz C3 256MB RAM). Recently it's got to the point where the MVP does a "contacting servers..." after virtually every other button press! I reckon this is probably due to the oh so clever hauppauge MVP timeout feature....

Anyway I figure one way "around" this is to tune up GBPVR for max performance...

So any suggestions?

I thought of:

1) Get more RAM.
2) Clean up the database? HOW? What do I get rid of?
3) Tune the database? Enable indexing?
4) Remove dead channels?
5) EmptyEPG?
6) Up the priority on the GBPVR.exe process?

Anyone done any tuning to get GBPVR to speed up a bit?
(No suggestions of get a more powerful CPU please! I like my silence...)

Cheers

Steve

Some of that might help, especially the adding more RAM although I would try to borrow another stick first rather than buying one. I also seem to remember, and this may be incorrect mind, that the EPIAs can have problems when running two sticks of memory. I have one 512 in mine.

But, I still think you'd be looking at about a 3 second response time with the GBPVR client.

The "contacting servers" issue could be unrelated. But that statement depends on whether GBPVR's dongle.bin is any different to the Hauppauge dongle.bins and whether it has been changed recently. I have found that most newer Hauppauge MVP drivers gave me that problem intermittedly. I've settled on an old driver which hasn't lost connection with the server yet.
GB-PVR 1.0.16 (recording service and database) running on: VIA EPIA 5000 (533Mhz), 512MB, 40GB HD, PVR-150MCE, USB-UIRT controlling Sky Digital box.

GB-PVR 1.3.11 (front-end and client for above) running on: Toshiba NB100 netbook 1.6Ghz, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM.

Front-end viewed on 2xMVPs (using mvpmc dongle).

Cheers borgs,

I think I'll look out for a 512 stick! (you've got an EPIA any recommendations on type? I know they're fussy).

Which version of dongle.bin are you using? (and where can I get it?) 3 second response time is better than the 30secs it might take to reconnect..longer if I have to kick the server.

Cheers

I run on one 256 stick DDR2700 instead of the spec DDR2100 so I can reuse in other PC when needed, is rock stable.

One thing I noticed is I typically get 14 days of EPG. And when doing upgrades... I leave it set to 3. It definitely seems to respond a lot better with less data in the EPG. I have not actually tested this, but it sure seems that way, especially when opening the guide.

I haven't had any problems with the Crucial stick I'm running. As I said before though, I wouldn't go out and buy one specifically as you may find there is very little difference.

I'll find out the version I'm using tonight but you'll have to make sure that GBPVR will be able to run with it.

Cheers

How do you set the update to 3 days? Sorry I don't quite understand...
