Video playback on MVPs

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I use GBPVR as the interface on MVP's and have never been able to reliably navigate through .mpg files. When I Fast forward (or rewind), the MVP displays the FFD symbol, but the picture just freezes and after about 5 secs returns back to the menu screens. When using skip, the video quite often jumps to a random place sometimes near to the end (50 minutes or so). The length of the video is often reported wrong as well.

Most of my mpgs are from video capture on a Hauppauge WinTV Express card and I get the same result on DVD's I've ripped. I thought at first that it was due to my slow machine, but I built a new one yesterday with the same result.

Should I expect for this to reliably work, or is it still work in progress? Would getting a card like the PVR350 help, or is that just for capture and direct TV output i.e. wouldn't help play back of mpgs on an MVP using GBPVR?

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated so I can start to use the Video options on this great looking app, and finally stop using the default MVP interface.

Cheers, Rob

FF/RW on the MVP is a recent addition, and does still have a few quirks depending on the source of the video. The problem is almost certainly caused by GB-PVR being unable to determine the correct lenght of the MPEG video on these files. It doesn't do this on all files. For me, it is quite reliable on recordings made on my (now dead) Hauppauge capture card, but I have seen this on MPG files from the internet.

If you have access to web server, can you create a relatively short video clip that exhibits the problem and email me a download link. Anything up to about 50mb will be fine.

Was this ever resolved? I have noticed this problem. To be honest I have yet to find an Mpg1 or mpg2 file I can fast forward with GB-PVR. I can fast forward them with the hauppauge software...

This question was only asked yesterday. To be honest, I havn't done anything since yesterday. I watched Troy at the movies last night. I didn't think it was that great. [Image: biggrin.gif]

All of my MPG video files I test with have been recorded with my PVR350. When I'm seeking in MPG files, I look for specific sequences of bytes. These bytes always seem to be present in my recordings, but I suspect these bytes arn't always present in MPG video from other sources. If you've got a specific video file (preferrably short) that has the problem, send me a download link and I'll give it a go.

To confirm what Sub said, any recording that I have done with my PVR250 has played back on the MVP and I can do FFW/RWD without any problems.

Hi Sub,

Thanks for the response and sorry for taking a bit of time in getting back to you. Had to set up some web space to post an mpg to. To confirm I can't get any of my recordings or ripped DVDs to FF/RW, but I have found a short clip I downloaded from somewhere that does, so it must be something to do with the file formats. The recordings I take are from a WinTV Express card and work fine with the Hauppauge software. Many of the long recordings also report the wrong length, but when I edit them down to a smaller size to put on the web for you, the time then reports correctly!

If you do get a chance, here's an example of a file I can't FF (http://home.btconnect.com/myhomecontrol/4sub/). If this looks like it will be difficult to correct, maybe you could just advise me on the difference between a PVR250/350 and which would make the most from GBPVR. I'm looking for an excuse to buy one but can't see the difference between the two (except the price!Wink

Cheers, Rob

Hi sub, I've got the same problem with skipping and ff. Works fine GBPVR on my PC but not on the mediaMVP (same file!Wink. It generates a dotnet error on the pc. (screendump in http://www.familiekooij.net/error.doc and logfile as http://www.familiekooij.net/GBPVR.exe.log (contains error description 'file marker placed before file' in dutch ;-)
Got a PVR-250 as a recording device.

I have dozens of mpg1 and mpg 2 files created by Pinacle Studio, or with TMPGenc (great app for recoding AVIs to good quality mpg1 or 2) and none of them play correctly. Reading the post some of them report the wrong length as well. I'd not noticed this before.

Jet, when you say none of them play correctly, what happens? Is it just FF/RW/Skip having problems or are these files not playing at all?
