program used for compressing videos

We all know that gbpvr creates relatively large files - so much so that I know want to compress some of the videos more. The question thus becomes what do you use to compress you're video's. I'm used to compressing DVD's, but as these are mpeg's the programs I use wont touch them.. so what do you use and why?

What format do you want to convert them to? I leaves things as mpg but will either transcode them (via rejig) or re-encode them by using tmpgenc. There is also quenc (which is a free encoder) but i have not really given that a test run. Try browsing videohelp.com for a large volume of guides.

I really don't mind about the final format - i just want small files! I figured that DivX (avi's) would be the smallest... giving rejig a go as i type though

have you consider lower the capture bit rate. I have used MPEG2 2Mbits/sec HalfD1 to capture with good result with approx 1GB per hour. That way you don't have to re-encode to other format.
