You probably dont have the appropriate decoder installed for your AVI file.
An AVI file is just container that can contain lots of different types of audio/video data. Some of the more common video types used in AVI files xvid or divx, but there are also lots of other types. Each type requires an appropriate decoder to be installed.
What type of AVI file are you trying to play? If you dont know, you might need to download something like AVIcodec or gspot to check.

It doesnt use Directshow decoders, so isnt really a good check of whether your system is setup for playing these types of file. Playing the file in Windows Media Player is probably a good test of whether GB-PVR will be able to play it.
