Hey again everyone! As a quick update to those who spent so much time helping me out with my last problem I thought I would give you all an update real quick.

I was able to record shows fine on only one input of my PVR-500 but the other would always be a 0Kb file. Well, Hauppauge tech support told me to send the card back to them and they would replace it for me...they didn't even ask me for any information regarding where/when it was purchased or anything! What great guys and gals Smile In either case, my new one works great!

Anyway...on to my new question...here is a scenario:
-Totally formatted hard drive gets Win XP Pro put on it (and all necessary drivers and Windows updates)

Which codecs am I going to need to go get in order for GBPVR to properly record shows.

My new card worked fine on an old machine with tons of crap on it, but I wanted to wipe it clean and turn it into a dedicated HTPC. Now I find that GBPVR is indeed recording my programs but when I go to play them back I see a black screen and no audio.

Anyone have any quick ideas so that I won't have to hunt down every codec that I even had on that computer? Smile

Thanks!

You don't need any codec to record. You only need them to view the recordings. The mpeg codec that comes on the cd from hauppauge (or from their support site) is enough to make things roll, but you might get better performance from other codecs, depending on your hardware. Start with the one from Hauppauge (can't remember the name right now) and work from there.

There are alternatives.
The Hauppauge one is produced by Intervideo.
If you have WinDVD (5, 6, or Platinum), you get another Intervideo mpeg-2 codec in the list.
If you have Cyberlink's PowerDVD (and some of the other Cyberlink software), then they usually included the Cyberlink mpeg-2 codec.
There are also a couple of free ones available (google it).
You can also get one by installing BeyondTV, then uninstalling it. It nicely leaves it's mpeg-2 decoder behind Smile
You can never have enough tuners!

Thanks for the replies Smile Let me make sure I have this straight.

Currently I have a couple of Family Guy episodes on my hard drive that I recorded on my clean-Windows machine. So all I would have to do to be able to view them now is to put on something like Cyberlink PowerDVD, or Intervideo to mooch the video codecs...thus allowing me to watch what I have already recorded?

Well, yes... if a missing codec is indeed the problem =)
