Most of my MP3s were ripped in iTunes. Anything that was ripped in iTunes doesn't show up correctly in MyMusic. After looking at what DID show up right, I think it's a function of what version of ID3 the tags are in.

Can anybody comment on this? Is there a way to use more recent tags in MyMusic?

Ok...

I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I'm not sure that's true. I can see the tags just fine in Windows Explorer (from my windows box) or from Konqueror (from my linux box). There's nothing wrong with the tags themselves if something like a file browser can see them without problems.

I'm pretty sure it's just that MyMusic is using an older version of the ID3 spec. Can anybody confirm or deny that?

I don't use Itunes either, it's not a favorite of mine but i am curious. isn't a ID3 spec the same for anything that uses an ID3 tag? I know there are ID3v1 and ID3v2 but i would have thought they would be the same. Can there be different ID3 spec's out there?

I'll just jump in...ID3v1 and V2 are VERY different.

ID3V1 is a simple 128 byte fixed field section at the start of an MP3 file.
ID3V2 however is a frame based store of information I think at the end, and there are a heap of tags, including pictures.

Ah, that explains why the music panel shows a default picture even though i have album covers embedded in some mp3 files. The jukebox though shows the proper album cover. I remember reading that it supported ID3v2.

My question is though, even if a program supports only ID3v1 tags wouldn't or shouldn't all ID3v1 tags be the same?

Yeah ID3V1 tags should be the same, its only really the v2's that supports all the different types of frames.

I can't back up or dispute what reven says since I've never looked into iTunes to say, but i wouldn't put it past Apple to do "something wierd" with the mp3's they rip.

i use ultraid3 which supports
id3 v1
id3 v2.0 to v2.4 (or something like that, i know it works fine with 2.4)

its a really good library its better than the winamp one (the guy who wrote it keeps telling winamp about a bug theyve never fixed in their id3 tagger).
if itunes is the only ripper that is causing this, THEN ITS ITUNES!

i really really hate itunes.
