Hello to all.

GB-PVR looks like a very neat piece of software and there is a nice group of people here at this forum.

I currently use SageTV becuase it lets me capture video directly to DVD compliant MPEG2. This means that I can simply load it up with my authoring program and burn straight to dvd with no re-encoding.

Now, I know GB-PVR captures to MPEG2. But is it dvd compliant MPEG2?

If not, what would be the process I'd have to go through in order to convert it to dvd compliant MPEG2?

Depends on your capture card, and whether you are capturing NTSC or PAL streams. What do you have?

Hi, thanks for the fast reply.

I am using the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 and capturing NTSC.

Is this good or bad?

You're fine Smile

Here's the NTSC DVD Specification:

NTSC (NTSC Film)

Video:
Up to 9.8 Mbit/sec MPEG2 or up to 1.856 MBit/sec MPEG1 video
720 x 480 pixels MPEG2 (Called Full-D1)
704 x 480 pixels MPEG2
352 x 480 pixels MPEG2 (Called Half-D1, same as the CVD Standard)
352 x 240 pixels MPEG2
352 x 240 pixels MPEG1 (Same as the VCD Standard)
29,97 fps (frames/second)
23,976 fps with 3:2 pulldown = 29,97 playback fps (NTSC Film, this is only supported by MPEG2 video)
16:9 Anamorphic (only supported by 720x480)

Audio:
48000 Hz
32 - 1536 kbit/sec
Up to 8 audio tracks containing DD (Dolby Digital/AC3), DTS, PCM (uncompressed audio), MPEG-1 Layer2. One audio track must have DD or PCM Audio.

Extras:
Menus, still pictures, subtitles and more.

If you have it plugged into USB2.0, you can record at up to 12 Mbit/sec - more than enough for DVD (which max's out at 9.8); USB1.1 records at up to 6Mbit/sec, which is perfectly acceptable.

Unfortunately, none of the Hauppauge PVR series capture AC-3 audio (they don't distribute a licence), so you have to reencode the audio for compliance. Not a problem as just about all authoring programs do this (I use DVD Architect, but I know that Ulead, TMPEnc and Nero all do). It doesn't take that long; it's when you start having to mess around with video it takes the time.

To archive a typical movie to DVD-5 with no compressive reencoding (ie, >4.35GB) typically takes me about 30-40mins.

YMMV, but I am certain you'll be fine. You've got everything you need right there - Get rid of sagetv and come over to the light...! Smile

Huh? VOB2MPG does not make DVD-compliant files.

Yes, it should be. I specifically tell the drivers to produce an dvd compliant stream. You can change this to a SVCD or VCD or other stream type by editing direct.ini if your need to.

If GB-PVR produces DVD compliant mpeg2 streams, then why does MyVideos have to use all that software to get it to burn to a dvd?
configuration:
dvddecrytper - http://www.dvddecrypter
dvdauthor - dvdauthor.sourceforge.net
PVAStrumento - used to demux the file, http://www.offeryn.de/dv.htm#pvash
mkisofs - used to create an iso from the directory created by dvdauthor (http://smithii.com/)

While the video format on a DVD is technically MPEG2, the DVD standard requires more than *just* an MPEG2 file. The MPEG2 has to be converted into VOB files (which are basically just MPEG2s with a 1GB max size), audio has to be either AC3 or LPCM format, a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directory structure has to be created, yada yada yada...

All DVD authoring tools have to do this, and the software required by My Videos employs free/ open source software to accomplish these steps.

Hope this helps.
