I really have tried to fix this but:...

I have an experimental rig which I have to get right before I can unleash GBPVR on the family on the real thing (probably MVP based). GBPVR is certainly the best around but I cannot solve just one problem.

Files recorded through the recording service do not skip correctly on playback. What happens is that any attempt to do either short or long skips or an absolute reposition results in the hard disk light going full on as the player process just seeks through the entire file and then returns to the GBPVR menu after a few minutes (file is about 35 minutes long).

The set up is a 2GHz processor with 1GB memory. Hauppauge nova-t PCI and the recording is off UK Freeview (BBC1). Reception is perfect and the recording is perfect, at least visually and audibly.

Here are some other variables that I have tried:
1. This same file plays back perfectly in Nero6. It will seek happily both forwards and backwards.
2. It does not play happily in Media Player. It won't seek at all.
3. Nero6 correctly detects that it is 16:9 whilst neither GBPVR nor media player does. At least GBPVR allows you to switch.
4. If I record a file using WINTV2000 then GBPVR will play that and will skip short and long backwards and forwards with ease.

If I also take a file recorded via GBPVR and look at it with VideoRedo, that is able to skip backwards and forwards quite happily, also auto detecting that it is 16:9. If I get VideoRedo to save a new copy of the file, not only is the file about 25% smaller (Note that VideoRedo says that it does not re-encode!!), but the resulting file will play AND skip backwards and forwards in GBPVR.

So - I conclude that whoever is doing the recording in GBPVR is not quite getting it right! But I can't find an option that works. I have only the one bda muxer:
Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MpgMux 3.0.07.05.ax
VERSION: 3.0.07.05

Any clues as to what I must tweak please.

If this is fixed then I can fill the house with GBPVR.

This mux is the most likely cause. That version is really really old. The mux is responsible for creating all the timecodes that are inserted in the resulting MPEG2 file. These timecodes are very important for skipping.

Most people here are using a much newer version of the Cyberlink mux - either v5.0.0813 or v5.0.1307. I'm guessing that if you install either of these your problem will go away.

Unregister the old cyberlink mux and get a newer version - details of where to find it in this thread, works fine for me using a Nova-T & Freeview.

Thanks. Sounds highly likely. Can't remember where I got this one. Have got the new one now and will try tomorrow. It's late now here in the UK.

It never ceases to amaze me how fast people respond.

I hope to provide some feedback on my own experiences to help the cause.

have now installed this one:

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MpgMuxTH.ax
VERSION: 5.0.1307

Did a test recording and it all worked perfectly. It skips backwards and forwards properly and after loading and saving with VideoRedo the file size is hardly changed. What's more there were no "fixes" applied by VideoRedo (unlike before where it would typically be reporting sync errors etc.). Capture CPU consumption also went down.Smile Smile

Thanks for the help - I guess that I should have spotted it really, but you become blind to the real problem when all changes seem to make no difference.

Now I'm going to buy an MVP, test it and release it to the TV Room!

Well, I would have bought the MVP but it seems to be out of stock in the UK. Anything from 2 to 4 weeks delivery Sad . Guess I'll just have to hone the setup a little more.

Scan & Novatech have them available in 1-2 days supposedly, these may not be the cheapest prices though.

I'm guessing they're running down stock to replace it with the wireless MVP when it's finally released.

Saw the Novatech but didn't believe it as it says "usually ships within 48 hours" and the stock situation is "13 at suppliers". That's probably the same 13 that DABS are expecting!

Scan is a good price but does say out of stock as well as 2 days leadtime. I hadn't seen this one so thanks. Given that I have to build a new system I might just take a chance on the Scan offer and see if it comes within the next couple of weeks.
