What config values effect the MVP picture quality for live tv?

I assume Hauppauge tweak tool would but what about things like the bit rate values?

Yeah, I would think the main factor is the bit rate. You can change it by editing the capture source profile for Live TV. I have never changed it from the default settings.

Previously on my old tv (a 32 inch CRT) the MVP picture was perfect with the default settings. I just got a 42 inch Plasma and the picture appears blocky on that set.

What would be the highest possible bitrate settings I could use without issue? My specs are:

Athlon 64 3700
2gig ram
pvr150
wired MVP through 10/100 router

Maybe its something other than bit rate if the picture was satisfactory on the other tv. Sounds more like a problem with the connection between the MVP and the new tv. Are you using the rca composite video connection or the s-video?

Since I haven't tried higher bit rates than what Live TV uses by default, (4500 with peak 7200), I don't know how high you can go without other problems. The pvr150 can capture up to 12000 I believe, but more than 9000 seems overkill to me.

If the 42 inch plasma you mentioned is a High Definition Set, that's the problem. Several months ago I connected my MediaMvp to a 48 inch Projection HDTV set and the video quality was horribly bad (same symptoms you have) and I was playing back Directv sourced recordings. The DishNetwork video recordings looked way better than the Directv recordings on that same HDTV set. The MediaMvp is only a standard definition network video player. That one of the many reasons I'm sticking to SDTV sets for now. Hauppauge would have to make a MediaMVp for HDTV use.

Also, I must say that the original Directv stream looked WORSE than the MediaMVP recordings from the SAME STB box, then again it could be just me.

Well, if there is a spare jack on the tv for svideo in I would try that before giving up. Should give you more scan lines than composite video I believe.

These results were from the s-video cables and ports.

Same problem here. I recently got myself a Sony KDL 32V2000 LCD tv. Since then, I see more blockyness then before on my oldfashioned tv. Even with a bitrate of 8000, the blocks remain.
Can this be solved by using different/newer/older Hauppauge drivers? I assume the hauppauge drivers are responsible for the recording quality.

I really doubt this has anything to do with rec-quality. I think it has sto do with the way your plasma handles s-video. The mvp will always give default s-video resolution: 720x480(ntsc) 720X576(pal).

I don't agree. If a DVD at 8000kpbs can be crisp sharp, a recording made on a PC with Hauppauge drivers should be crisp sharp too, not blocky. S-video has nothing to do with the result, it only defines how the image is sent from the MVP to your TV, nothing more.
