A few people have reported the MSI error that the file is not valid, please check blah blah blah. No one has suggested a fix for this other than reinstall windows.

I have totally rebuilt Windows XP professional. Brand new install on new partition, installed .Net 1.1, .Net1.1 SP1 and .Net2, plus directx9c and Windows installer3.1 and I STILL get this bloody error. GBPVR looks really good but I can't install it at all.
I have another PC and it installs fine on that. Could this be a hardware related issue?

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appricated

Cheers
Mike

Update
I have managed to get a copy of 0.97.13 and this installs with no problems, but 0.98 gives me this MSI error "The installation package could not be opened" etc etc
Not sure but it looks like the issue is the 0.98 version on my machine.

Anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it?

It sounds like a corrupt installer download. I've only seen about one other report of recent weeks, and given the thousands of downloads we've had since the last release, I'm pretty we'd have heard more about it if there was something wrong with the v0.98.8 installer.

I hear what you are saying and would agree it is a logical conclusion. However, the fact remains that my PC build was brand new, new OS (XP SP2) new DotNet install, new Installer 3.1 install and the problem still happened with 0.98
I have tried all the obvious things but nothing seemed to help which is why I am wondering if there is some hardware that is causing this.

several times. The file is not corrupt because it installs on a second PC that I have just not this one that I want to use, which makes me wonder if it is hardware related. Is there some code in the MSI file that doesn't agree with a hardware driver

Here is what I have.

QDI socket 370 motherboard
Pentium 3 1.2Ghz
1.2 Gb SDRAM (133Mhz)
Hauppauge HVR-1300
creative audigy soundblaster
Nvidia GEforce4 64Mb
120GB EIDE harddrive
2 x DVD RW drives (liteon and Samsung)
1 media card reader
belkin USB2 PCI card

Have you tried installing in safe mode?
Not sure if GBPVR will install in safe mode though.

Could it possibly be a bad ram chip?
Can you use just one stick of ram to see if one is bad?

You could also try disabling the following hardware in the device manager:
1 media card reader
belkin USB2 PCI card

as their different pieces of hardware.

I'm just guessing here though.
Sorry.

try extracting the msi... then install.. if you cant figure out how.. just start installing in a dif machine.. and at the first screen go and grab all the files in the temp directory that were extracted... winzip will unpack most MSI's as well if I recall,,

what is the exact error you get??
how are you getting the file from one computer to the other?
are you using administrator account to install?
