I just installed my Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 on my 1.5-year-old Windows XP Home Edition Toshiba laptop. (I also have a DirecTV DVR Plus Model R15.)The PVR and FM tuner worked quite well, except for 1 annoying problem* that Hauppauge tech support folks couldn't find a fix for (yet, anyway). So that led me to search the 'net for a fix, which led me to discover GBPVR.com.

I haven't download the GBPVR09905.msi file yet because I'm not familiar with .msi files. (I'm very experienced in downloading and installing .exe files.) Is there anything I should know before proceeding to download that .msi file? Should I save it (in my C:\Downloads folder?) first, or simply Run it?

Thanks!

*The "annoying problem" is that when I watch a live or recorded TV show on my PC using my PVR, all 4 edges of the viewing screen are perfect, no matter what screen size I use. But if I record a live or previously recorded show, when I then play the .mpg video file created by the Recorder function, there's a thin area along the top edge of the entire video that apparently the Recorder didn't properly record. (My husband says this problem is probably referred to as "noise.") I've updated my graphics card driver and also updated all of the programs that came with the PVR, but that didn't fix the problem. Then I tried every combination of WinTV2000 program settings tweaks possible, but that didn't fix the problem either. I LOVE this new "video appliance" but I'm very disappointed to think that all .mpg files its Recorder creates will have this annoying flaw. If anyone has any suggestions for fixing this problem, I'd sure appreciate hearing them! Thanks.

an msi file is just a windows installer. very similar to an exe but microsofts version. just pretend its an exe.

you can just run it no need to save it.

Regarding your problem. The issue is that line is normally off screen on overscan. You can either crop the videos or change the overscan settings in gbpvr to make it cut off the top for you, see here: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=19128

If you're seeing what looks like a few lines of white moving spots, this is the line21 information, commonly used for carrying closed caption or teletext information. This is a normal part of the picture transmitted to your TV, but TVs overscan the picture so that this garbage is off the top screen (so that you dont see it).

As -Oz- pointed out above, you can configure GB-PVR to apply overscan to hide this info in the same way your tv would, but it'll still capture this info in the .mpg files since it is part of the picture.
