I can no longer connect GBPVR with my media MVP. I need some ideas.

1. If I use the MediaMVP software everything works. Can watch shows / prerecorded movies etc no problem.

2. I uninstall MediaMVP and installed GBPVR 1.08. MVP displays contacting servers page. Waiting 10 minutes. Config file has autostart set to 2. Tried (1) also. Just figured maybe 2 would help (2 threads I assume).

3. Read through log. Saw an error

"Unexpected error finding MAC address"

4. PVR2 works on local machine

Any ideas?

Yeah, I'd definitely say thats the error, but I dont know what it means. I dont remember having seen any other reports of that error in the past.

It's a .net error rather than a GB-PVR error, so I'd try googling on "System.Management.ManagementException: Provider load failure"

I have been rather ashamed that somehow this service got clobbered on me. I am a Network Engineer and my wife has been teasing me that I couldn;t fix it.

Anyway---- as we all know if you keep plugging away you eventually find the problem.

A while back I notice some extraneous 139 traffic being sent out from my machine (attempted firewall blocked it). So I disabled Netbios over TCP/IP.

Guess what?

GBPVR needs this service running in order to communicate with the MVP unit. My guess is not many if (any) people disable this service but in case there are a sysadmins out there who watch every packet and disabled in on theior widows box...enable it.

For those who are unaware this service can be toogle in services or in the properties of TCP/IP advanced under Wins (1st or second radial button).

Cheers All.

Time to start recording again.

Nothing worse  - I'm on the software side and when that sort of thing happens to me... I just hand my wife the hammer and say 'On you go then...' - Always works for me... Wink

Sadly (if your wife reads this forum) gbpvr can connect to an mvp without netbios over tcp being enabled. Also I think it is port 445 that is used for tcp's netbios. Port 139 isn't enabled on my machine

445 is smb (*nix world) SAMBA

137-139 is Netbios (windows - Dates back at least nt 4.0) Not sure exactly when NetBeui stuff was replaced with TCP (basically from what I recall when MS took code from the BSD tcp stack).

I found a reference to how I interpret ports 139/445 near the bottom of this link.

http://www.petri.co.il/what_is_port_445_in_w2kxp.htm

I still don't think it has to be enabled.

GB-PVR isnt using this directly, and in theory its not required for communication with the MVP, but it looks like Windows uses this behind the scenes when you ask it for the hostname.
