I've been having an issue with both flavors of the UI: gbpvr and pvrx2. What happens is simple: it freezes. The why and the fix, well,... there's a reason for every post, right ?

The application will freeze, hard. It takes Task Manager to get rid of it, and if I was watching live tv, I need to restart the recording service. It happens quite frequently, with the freeze-up happening as quickly as 60 seconds after launch and as long as almost an hour. I've tried a number of things including updating video drivers, reading many of the posts here about freezing, examining logs, watching operation in general (eg, process explorer) and so forth. So far, nothing stands out as the potential issue. When frozen, the app is not using CPU time. No other video app on this system behaves this way. For instance, I've been watching the recorded media with VLC as it's just too annoying to watch it with pvrx2 with the freeze-ups. I've tried a few different version of gbpvr, including the latest, with no change in behavior.

I'm looking for possibilities, things to try, general advice... any suggestions ? Thanks !

Reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the logs.

To make a long story short.... My best bet is that you reinstall windows.

Well, it ran for well over an hour last night, and I stopped it myself. Just now, though, it ran for less than a minute before freezing. I'm attaching the logs, as well as some windbg output. Once the process had been frozen for a bit, I attached to it and obtained a little bit of info. I don't know if it helps, but I assumed that it couldn't hurt. Thanks for taking a look at this. If there's something that I can do to help, please let me know.

There is no clear cause in the logs.

Have you tried other video decoders to see if it helps?

goto control panel
open adminstrative tools
event viewer
on right pane click on system see if there are any errors
you could also check the application one while you are there
this may not tell you anything but it may show what leads to the freeze

I hadn't seen anything in the logs, and given the time deltas between the last log entry and the freeze, it wasn't clear if either the log data wasn't being flushed to disk, or whether there just wasn't anything there. I'm inferring from your response that it's the latter (which did seem more likely). Does the app, by any chance, generate even more debugging info via OutputDebugString ?

Other decoders - I had tried a few, but with your suggestion that it might help, I'm trying yet more. Sometimes this fails (freezes) right away, and sometimes not. So, I'll keep poking away at it. If any other ideas occur, I'm game to try them.

There was a mention of event viewer - one of my first stops - nothing there.

Thanks !

No. All its logging goes to the log files.

A follow-up, for the benefit of anyone who might at some point read this:

Trying other decoders appears to have provided a workaround/fix. I eventually tried some decoders that I don't like very much, and therefore hadn't tried them before. One of them, at this point, appears to work. That is, I haven't seen a freeze-up since switching to it. I may, as I get more time to experiment, try others as well. You might wonder why I'm not charging forward on this, and it's simple: I either don't like the output of the decoder, or it caused other issues. But, constant output of poorer quality is sometimes better than no output of better quality.
