Not a GBPVR question but a weird one just the same..
I've been trying to get remote desktop working to my wife's office from home for a couple of days without any luck. It will work from my office to her office, but not from my house. I don't ever get a logon when I try from home.

WINXP Firewalls on both machines are off. Router port 3389 is forwarded on her work router firewall.
When I try to connect from home to her, no conection.

I then forwarded port 3389 on the home router. She can connect to my machine from her work to home. This would indicate the router can pass the packets ok. Tried the other direction, no go.

I would have thought there was a problem on her side, but I can connect to her from my work.
I don't get it - Router is a DI524 on home side, WRT54 on her work side.
Any thoughts or diagnostics that you guys can think of?

If you don't find an answer here, check out the networking forum over at http://www.dslreports.com Lots of pretty sharp folks hang out there. Smile

Maybe a firewall setting in the router. Forwarding a port doesn't necessarily mean that it's opened, I think.

That would have been my guess but it works from my work to her so that would mean her side is ok.
It doesn't work from home, but you don't have to open a port to allow that to work. (or do I?)

Where is 'work' located? in a totally seperate building? Does it have inner and outer firewalls? possibly a second outer firewall at work is blocking the incoming packets before they reach her computer?

Work is in a different building. It's a little complex how her system works since there is two VLANS, but at the end of the day there is a WRT54G router that connects to a T1 lan interface. I can get RDC working from my work to her work ok so I would think that her side is ok. From my house it won't work, but I have pretty much disabled the router there, but I will completely remove it tonight in case that is causing trouble.
If not I would think it is something that Time Warner is doing but I can't really find any info on that being the case.

I'm going to try that tonight. It will be a little different since I will have to use VPN to get in to my office, but I will see what it does.
