so like when sub releases a new version
normally he recommends switching back to the blue skin
isnt that enough
i mean once you start adding plugins skin etc you are no longer a new comer and are looking to break things, oops i mean make them better
so i guess maybe just people need to read the survival guide which may need to be made a bit clearer that you need to read it
and yes i guess they could say what its been tested with
but last time i looked at the wiki things are already organised in that way anyway

What possible good is writing not tested with plugin "x" or skin "y" going to do? People are still going to try and I am not going to say "sorry not supported" since when the logs are check someone can very likely see the error and direct the user to the right forum. In my experience the other developers have been very quick to react and make the required changes to this type of problem. This is what makes this group of users and developers here a community and not split in may ways as you first stated to catch my attention.

Time to join hands and sing "Kumbaya" I think

Big Grin I saw the first post hit the forum just as I went out for the evening - been looking forward to reading the replies - knew it would be a good one.

Speaking as a non-developer (mere end user) I'd like to add that before the community skin was available it was a bloody nightmare changing skins at all because they'd only cover a certain set of plugins. Unless you had exactly the same plugins as the skin writer you were really stuck with blue and nothing else. The community skin has gone a huge way already to addressing many of the problems actually highlighted by the OP.

Also many of the issues are really just symptoms of the multi-person 'community' development of GBPVR. There is no way in hell that it could operate like a commercial company where each plugin is tested with each skin option and every new plugin, skin or GBPVR update works seamlessly at release (or even expect that everyone takes the time to document properly what will and won't work from their testing). BUT I've never found this to be a problem. Such is the dedication of the developers (which I'll reinforce again are working for free in their spare time with boundless altruism) that if you do find a glitch with one thing or another it rarely takes more that a couple of posts and a few logs to have it all working right again in a few days.

It's not wrong to want some kind of coding utopia, but I think asking for it without seeming to really understand just how good (and continually improving) it is already is a bit off key, and hence why it's got so many peoples backs up.

I think maybe you set your goalposts wrong, you were very frank with your initial statements and kept bulldozing. The joy of a GBPVR Forum, oooops sorry now PVRX2 to you is that people care :p

far out, what a stupid thing to bitch about... plugins are just that, plugins - they're written for free and not officially supported by sub. Tell you what, if you WANT this done, how about you spend 1/100th of the time of the developers, install all the plugins and test if they work with the skins, and actually help the community rather than bitch about it, by telling the developers what work and what doesnt, and they can decide if they want to make it work or not.

If you think this is too much of us to ask of you, then you're a hypocrite.

My comments about the skins were directed towards the plug-in developers. That is why I posted this thread in the "Plugin and Skin Support" forum and not in the "Support" forum which, if I understand correctly, is for issues related to the functions provided by sub.

Also, I didn't think I was "bitching" but was offering an honest suggestion to make the whole GBPVR experience better for the users at the same time as making less Support work for the developers.

There is just too much venom around here. As I mentioned, I didn't start this thread to beat up on developers or to start a flame war.

For those of you who are offended (whether you are a developer or not) forget I even mentioned this.

To the others, please just think about what I suggested and consider it in your future releases of any plug-ins.

I do understand your points (and wasn't offended). I was trying to explain why things are the way they are. I do agree that we should at least mention what skins/versions are known to work with the plugins.

McBainUK, sincere apologies for forgetting to mention you! :o

LewE, you are not the first one to express these concerns, and you won't be the last. I appreciate the comments.

There was quite the skinning revolution a while back which actually led to the community skin being developed. Like others have stated, 3rd party skins were a mess as far as plugin compatibility are concerned. I will make sure I add a note on the wiki to help clairfy a few things. If, at any time, a plugin gets updated and fails to work with the CommuintySkin, copying the skin files from blue to Community3 will work. We designed compatibility in to support this. I feel I have been neglecting my imaginary duties here lately but I have been snowed under with work and personal life.

Good points in general. We'll get there someday. All of us together.

P.S.
Now who's idea was it to spend 8hrs today at a water park (oh wait...mine). SPF 50 my arse. Apply every two hours....right. I look like a Christmas ornament.

Cheers everybody, enjoy the rest of your weekend.
