Interesting, I tried a couple more recordings after the intial problem and they all had time stamp issues, after installing the drivers I've made several with no issues.

Now my problem is getting the doggone Vista Media Player and Media Center to play xvids and avis <- I've been fighting that since last night when I discovered GBPVR doesn't play those files (I almost cried when I discovered that!).

It's frustrating when I can walk right over to my XP machine and play them fine but the darn Vista stubbornly refuses to give in to any codec, program, whatever I've tried!

Oh well, I'll keep hammering at it, worst case I just reload it . . . nothing like a machine with no important data on it!

GBPVR plays xvids and avi files just fine, but you will need to install a decoder. You can download the xvid decoder from http://www.free-codecs.com/Koepi_XviD_download.htm. You'll most likely find Windows Media Player etc will be able to play these files after installing this decoder aswell.

Nope, that didn't do it.

When I try to load an avi into Windows Media Player I get a little box that says:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

When I try to load one into GBPVR it just flashes black and comes back to the choose video screen.

I've tried ffdshow, Vista Codecs 473, media control with ffdshow that was supposed to allow vmc to use ffdshow, and now the suggest xvid decoder.

They all install without complaint but they just don't work. It's as if something is keeping them from being accessed by the programs. GSpot 270a shows they are installed.

I've tried uninstalling, rolling Vista back to when I had just got it loaded up, etc. and nothing seems to help.

I can use vmc and gbpvr to view mpegs and wmvs and they work fine.

It's just frustrating. I had heard so much bad about Vista but just tried it out of curiosity. It installed well and pretty much worked well, but this avi files support issue is really annoying me!

THANKS for the suggestions SUB - if you think of anything else I'll happily give it a shot and let ya know what happens.

Take Care,

Steve

I watch AVI files all the time in GB-PVR on Vista, so I know there is nothing serious that should be stopping it from working. If you reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the pvxr2.exe.log and pvxr2.exe-native.log, then I'll take a look.

You may have found your need to install your codecs using 'run as adminstrator'.

(BTW, I'll soon move these off-topic posts over to a new thread in the support forum)

Thanks SUB,

I'm sure it is a problem unique to my machine and not GBPVR as GBPVR plays other video files fine and with VMP having problems too it points to a configuration issue with my machine.

I'm sorry for being off topic, these threads do seem to turn into conversations and then they wander off topic. I'll try to do better to stay on topic in the future.

Thanks again, I'll keep hammering at this in a bit.

Take Care,

No worries - I dont mind that it wasnt on topic, but I just thought it'd be better to move the discussion out of that thread.

Thanks Sub,

I rolled back again to when the machine was just loaded and then I tried your suggested xvid software and installed it with run as administrator and still no joy. I rolled back and tried ffdshow too and it didn't work either so run as administrator isn't the magic key.

It's really frustrating, it's like you load the stuff and it says it's loaded but it's really not as vmc nor gbpvr seems to be able to use it.

I've tried several avi files that all play on my XP machine, so it's not the avi files. I've even downloaded third party avi players and they worked, so I dunno what it is.

I may just reload the machine for giggles and see if I haven't corrupted something with all the loads and reloads. It's not a big loss as I'm just playing with a 40gb ide drive until my 750gb Seagate gets replaced and back to me.

Wish me luck!

OK, here they are . . . I went into GBPVR and tried to open an avi, it flashed and went back to the file select screen and then I exited and zipped up the log files.

THANKS!

Unfortunately the logs dont show too much. They do show that directshow is unable to find a suitable set of decoders for the file though, so I still think its just a case of getting the right decoders on there...
