Does a system require a lot of horsepower to record digital HD? If I have a Hauppauge 2250 and am recording 2 digital HD shows at the same time, what kind of CPU will I need?

to record hd no it shouldn't need much cpu, since hd is just a digital stream and so its just being dropped to the hard drive and not actually processed at all.

So, would an Athlon 64 X2 3700+ with 4g and SATA drives be enough power?

For just recording, it's overkill. Your P4 system would probably handle recording just fine...assuming you're using GB-PVR and not the stuff that comes with the HD-PVR. Recording HD is not a big deal...playback is the killer.

Edit: Just realized you weren't talking about the HD-PVR. Doesn't really matter...recording is not a Big Deal.

Well, just ordered a Hauppauge 2250, which is PCI-E x1, so need to get a new MB. I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with the 3700+ processor I thought about moving to my HTPC. It also has optical out. However, I have read differing statements about if 5.1 is available via the optical. I need to do some more research.
