How to display subtitles in DivX movies?

Hi forum,

After having been away from GB-PVR for a long (too long in fact ) time, I have downloaded it and is in the process of setting it up.

I have a number of DivX movies made with the tool Converter from DivX.com and my movies have embedded subtitles as made with the Converter tool. When playing such a movie in GB-GVR's Movie Library the movie it self plays fine (except when it has to read it over my network - see below). A small popup is displayed that this movie contains subtitles (I think this is done by the Divx codec). When pressing the on-screen subtitle button the subtitle is not displayed.

Any ideas?

While we are at it. As indicated above, when playing DivX movie over my network (cable 100 mbits) the move is jittery and sound full of "chops". Playing the movie in Windows Media Player or DivX player show the movie perfectly.

Any ideas?

Sorry, there is no build in support for divx subtitles.

But it would be vwry nice to have, I have a number of such movies myself, as I'm sure others too have. Sub, it it too much work to implement support for DivX-subtitles (and .divx movies)?

Could you change the way the subtitles are stored? The two obvious ways to subtitle would seem to be physically mix them into the video image or put them in an srt file (which is supported by GBPVR). I've seen divx encoded movies with it done both ways but I couldn't help you with which program they'd been transcoded with. Are there different subtitling options in the program you use at the moment?

The solution here is to use ffdshow to do divx playback (may require some playing about with codec priorities). You can then setup a shortcut within ffdshow to turn them on and off. FFDshow supports both embedded subtitles and srt type subtitles.
