Vista Client and User Accounts

I set up a Vista client which works fine whenever I am logged in (as an administrator). The problem is when my son is logged in to his own account (non administrator) PVRX2 crashes on startup as if the server can not be found/accessed (aka full screen red "X" error). Seems to be some sort of Vista user permission issue. Any suggestions?

maybe try making a shortcut with a built-in 'runas' administrator setup...so that only pvrx2 will be run as an admin...probably easiest way...

create shortcut to pvrx2..
select icon, rt click and hit properties..
In the properties dialog, select the "Shortcut" tab, and click Advanced.
In the Advanced Properties, check "Run as administrator," and click Ok:

I'm trying to setup a vista client from a vista server and cannot for the life of me get the client to be allowed access to the GBPVR install directory. The Recordings etc is fine as that's not on the system disk, but sharing of stuff on the C drive seems very odd. Even without password sharing it says access denied. Am I doing something dumb or is vista just annoying?

I think I've heard of Vista being "fiesty" about what it shares & allows people to view.
I have XP clients & vista & I get the big red X.

Wish I knew what all was required to "share" or stream properly.

I've managed to get my gbpvr install directory sharable (off the c drive - vista x64 server to vista32 client). Took a mate who used to work at MS to tell me how! The user must have a password else it wont work, although the client will need the password to access the gbpvr folder. Stuff not on the C drive seems to share fine without password though. Anyway to then get the PVR to still log on at boot time:
1. Click Start
2. Type netplwiz in the search-box and press enter.
3. Select the user you want to auto-login automatically and then uncheck the box reading “Users must enter a username and password to use this computer”.
4. Enter your password when prompted.
5. Click OK.

I've not tested this too well yet but I no longer get the big red X!

My server is WinXp. The new client that is causing me fits is a vista32 machine. I have passwords for all my accounts on both the server and clients. The vista32 client uses an autologin account that does not have admin privs. My gbpvr share on the server is completely open to everyone. Errrr - still wrestling with this. I don't want to give my son full admin on his vista32 machine... This should not be so difficult - especially given the inevitable growth in popularity of vista.

A bit of note,
With vista, if you disable password, you might still not be able to view shares from other boxes without password. I can try to explain the process that worked for me. 1st you share the folder & in share permissions make sure "everyone" is added & has all 'rights'. Then close that for the folder in question. Right click on the folder again, go to properties. Then go to security. Then Edit the permissions & again add everyone & give them "all rights" - but make sure then, that you have GOOD physical security on your network. and DO NOT do this on your C: drive, or any folder that you don't know it's importance. THis is the quick & easy but EXTREMELY RISKY way to get sharing working in vista (or windows 2003 network, if need be)

Are we talking about the GBPVR folder? Probably the TV buffer and recording directories as well?

Yes, specifically any folders you want to share. You can probably do that for your Video collection & music, if you so dare. BUt again, use security on your network, especially if you have Wifi, use WEP or WPA! If not, setup your network with 2 subnet's. With Wifi only able to get to the internet & your wired network on another that can get anyware. But then again, if you know how to setup 2 subnet's, you're probably already using some good security any place.

Ok got it working by setting GBPVR folder permissions to read and write for EVERYONE. Thanks everyone.

Now WMP has issues playing files on thew client unless the user has admin privledges ....something about my parental controls for web access are bothering WMP? This is my first go with Vista and the security issues are giving me fits.
