I've been playing around with the Windows 7 beta (x64) as a dress rehearsal for transitioning to a 64 bit OS. So far, so good. In fact, I'd buy Windows 7 right now if it was available.... it is that good.

GBPVR installs and runs perfectly from what I can tell. However, my Windows 7 machine is a client (the server is an XP machine) and I have yet to read up on the new networking procedure for Windows 7. Until I figure out how to make Windows 7 see XP shares and vice versa, the client can't see the server over the network yet.

But I did discover something very interesting.... although the XP server share isn't visible on the Windows 7 machine, the Windows 7 machine DID find all the GBPVR recordings on the XP server. They show up in a folder on the Windows 7 machine under my username called "Recorded TV". WMP plays them perfectly. But here's the interesting bit.... if I delete a recording from "Recorded TV" on the Windows 7 machine, it gets deleted from the XP machine as expected.... but it also no longer shows under "Recordings" in GBPVR on the XP machine. Does that mean that Windows 7 is manipulating the XP machine's GBPVR database or is GBPVR manipulating the database when it sees the file get deleted? I'm positive that the last time I deleted a recording from the GBPVR recordings share using Explorer on an XP client, the recording still showed up under "Recordings" in GBPVR until I also deleted it via GBPVR. ??

it depends on if you have it set to check for missing recordings
in config.xml
see if this is set to true:
<AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>true</AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>

i think its only used on startup of the app so if pvrx2 is already running when the file is deleted then it will probably not be removed till restart

Thanks, I'll look at that configuration parameter. That would explain it.

I know I have never changed it because I didn't know it existed, but maybe it got changed. In fact, I am glad you mentioned it.... I would PREFER it to check for missing recordings.

Now to figure out how to make Windows 7 display XP shares.

Everything I've heard about Windows 7 sounds excellent. I'm looking forward to giving it a shot when it reaches GA.

Well, Stustunz was correct. GBPVR is indeed checking for missing recordings. I can say for sure that it did not always do that and it is not a configurable option in the Config application and I haven't seen it in the PVR application either so I don't know how it got changed. But it is good news because now I can watch and delete recordings without having to use the GBPVR client and the server will keep track of the fact that I deleted recordings.

Windows 7 does indeed seem to be very good. I have only found one program that does not work, and that is an application that doesn't work in Vista either. ALL my other apps installed and function perfectly. It even had a driver for my Linksys PCI WiFi card and installed it silently. I am finding networking with XP non-intuitive, but I think maybe I just haven't figured out the secret. XP can see the Win7 machine but can't access it. Media player plays my PVR recordigns flawlessly right out of the box. Ditto for my h.264 and AVCHD recordings. No added codecs required. I absolutely love the concept of user access control and hate the implimentation. There is no way to OK a specific program so it doesn't bug you every time you start it. That creates a strong incentive to turn it off altogether, negating the security it brings.

But I can say that GBPVR works flawlessly in it if you can get networking going.

Its always done this, and always been enabled by default, so wouldnt have been something you changed.

Interesting. I am 100% positive that in the past, when I used Windows Explorer to manually delete recordings from the hard drive, GBPVR still showed them (but of course could not play them). They only went away if I then deleted them within GBPVR. That is why it was such a surprise when they went away after I deleted them via the Windows 7 machine.

While I have you, is there any way to make GBPVR delete the folder when it deletes the last recording in that folder? It would make browsing with Explorer easier because there wouldn't be a ton of empty folders.

It already does that, assuming the directory is empty. Some times users have extra comskip or other files hanging around in the directory, so the app wont try deleting it.

Well..... mine doesn't. In fact, as far as I can tell, it has NEVER deleted an empty folder.... I end up with folder for every new title I record and they stay forever after I delete the recordings until I manually delete the folder. I just deleted a bunch this morning.

Is this behavior configurable?

Let me check when I get home and see which GBPVR version I am running in case that makes a difference. I can't remember if I am still running 1.3.7 on the server or if I upgraded to 1.3.11. The clients are 1.3.11.

In config.xml do you have <AutoCreateFolders> set to true?
