Hi. I have been working on getting smooth playback for 2 months now.

I have tried to read all the posts and try a bunch of different combinations, but can't get GBPVR to play smoothly (medium quality, no HD channels). When I use VLC it can play HD and all the non-HD videos flawlessly. Does anybody have any suggestions? Is there a way I can add some buffer to GBPVR to enable smoother playback?

I don't need HD playback now and just want to watch a smooth video. I used to use the Hardware out of the PVR350, but after upgrading GBPVR this is no longer supported. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Here is my configuration:
3Ghz pent D
RAM: 2GB
Windows XP SP3 (updated)
video card:NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
capture care: Hauppauge HVR-1600 (recording QAM); latest drivers
GBPVR:1.4.7

demuxers:
CyberLink MPEG Muxer 5.0.2022 (very jerky; freezes often)
ATI MPEG Multiplexer 9.14.0.60504 (some skips, best of three)
InterVideo Multiplexer 3.0.88.0 (freezes recordingservice and does not record any video)

video decoders:
cyberlink
Mainconcept
intervideo
ATI MPEG
others

use ati mux to mpg, use ffdshow beta 6 codec for mpeg2, set it to use vid card's deinterlacer by setting output colorspace to NV12, auto for both deinterlacing options like shown in pic..
that card can barely do sd well, so hd for it is out of the question..you'll need a new one..
darn, can't seem to upload pic..

From my experience, a 7xxx Nvidia card is the minimum to get smooth operation of GBPVR ... and I wouldn't expect to get good HD with a 7xxx.

oh sure it can...i have a laptop with 7900gtx that works great with hd...no problem...
it just doesn't have h264 accell, mpeg2 no problem tho..
[helps that it has 256 bit memory]
i'd go with a nv9400+ or a ati4650+ for flawless playback of just about anything..
most any card can do it if it has 256bit memory access, [using software decode, hardware deinterlacing]

oh and use vmr9fse for really smooth playback..[or evr]

btw, here's the ffdshow pic..

p.s. forgot to mention must use libmpeg2 instead of avcodec for the mpeg2 codec or livetv will show black screen..

Saying HD is a little basic. For broadcast I read that many people can play 720p but 1080i stutters. Outside North America, or using the HD-PVR you pretty much need h264 which can be more demanding. And then there is BluRay quality HD which raw in m2ts challenges more cards and then when "compressed" in some mkv files with high bit rate and > BluRay ref. frames you really need the hardware acceleration.

I think I good test is to download a 1080p trailer from Apple http://www.apple.com/trailers/#section=justhd and see for yourself how your system handles it.

Thank you PBS. I configured it as above (ffdshow) and it is now working well with SD. The HD 1080p is very jittery, but to be expected from my weak video card. Thanks again.

cool, yea, that combo works on almost any card i've tried...even really weak ones...
[my ati9550 did HD fine with it...lol and Intel built-in video too with evr]
[intel only does evr decently, old and new chipsets]

so as long as your card's drivers deinterlace properly, ffdshow should be able get the most out of it...Smile

quality is exactly same for me as hardware decoding..

oh and try the mpchc mpeg demux, it might help with the HD stuff if you're lucky...

you can try the overlay renderer for HD... I get tolerable HD playback with overlay on a notebook with 1.7GHz Celeron-M and Intel 915GM integrated graphics. It lags when any onscreen graphics are shown, but it's pretty decent otherwise.
