Installing the 150 and 350

OK folks. I'm ready for the 'final' build. I want to install both the 150 and the 350 in this new system. I'm looking for a bit of advise on the order to do things. You should know that I plan on using the 350 a video out to the TV.

First, where should the cards be installed? Does it matter which card card goes where? Which one in what slot?

Next, how and when should the drivers/software be installed? CDs with the cards are: WinTV-PVR-150MCE has version 2.4, the 350 has V2.2A. Should I use drivers from another source? Newer? Should I install one card (which one?), then drivers, then other card, then drivers?

When I install GB-PVR, which card should be chosen as #1 and #2? Does it matter?

Thanks in advance for your help. If all goes well I'll have this purring before the weekend ends.

Yes it does matter. One will be #1, the other will be #2. I'm not sure what dictates the order you may need to try both combinations. I suspect it may relate to the PCI slot number.

Its only a theory I have, but if you install the PVR150MCE last, then I suspect the remote wont work - so I'd probably install the PVR150MCE first, PVR350 second.

I have also a PVR350 and a PVR150MCE, bot I can't get the remote running.

NOTE: GV-PVR is not installed at this point. I'm on a very clean brand new WinXP system and the below only talks about watching TV on the computer monitor with WinTV2000. I've used splitter break out the cable signal coming to my 'net cable modem: (a 1 to 3 splitter) cable -> splitter -> cable-modem/board 1/board 2

Status:
I installed the 150, used the driver CD from shspvr, and all worked! The remote worked and TV reception (on computer monitor) was good and my 'net connection stayed up.

I then installed the 350, it seemed to find the drivers on the CD just fine, and things got interesting.

1 - if I connect the cable to the 150 only I get no TV reception and my 'net connection dies.
2 - if I connect the cable to the 350 I get great TV reception and my 'net connection is good. The remote (connected to the 150! works)
3 - if I connect cables to both the 150 & 350, TV reception gets very fuzzy, sound gets bad, and my 'net connection gets dropped. I disconnected the cable to the 350 and connected the 150 - no TV picture/sound and my 'net connection still drops.

So I have a few questions. What's causing the 150 to kill my 'net connection? Does WinTV2000 allow you to select the input source (board) or does it just take the last one installed and configured? Which board should I select as #1 for GB-PVR?

Hugh, are you using a cable splitter? And is your internet connection via your Cable company? If so, it might be that splitting your cable too many ways is what gives you poor reception and a bad internet connection. This would be my guess, except you say that if you connect the cable to the 350 only, all is good, but if you connect to the 150 (which is the fault with my theory, unless you were using no splitter with your 350 and when you connected to your 150, you had a splitter but only connected the one cable to the 150; then my theory would be sound because even if you use one device, if it's still connected to a splitter, you'll only get half the signal strength).

Assuming the problem is a weak cable signal, you could try to get a signal amplifier/booster instead of using a splitter; that'll help your reception somewhat if you're splitting your cable too many ways. The best solution would be to call your cable company and see if they can boost the signal coming in. This has the added effect of boosting your output signal too (an amplifier only only "fixes" things one way, but it's not as good as getting your cable company to properly fix the problem).

Maybe I need to take a step back. My wants for this box are a small subset of what's available. They are:

1 - record 2 different programs at the same time.
2 - schedule programs either individually or as a complete season.
3 - watch recorded programs on my TV
4 - navigate GB-PVR on my TV
5 - burn recorded programs to a DVD that can be seen with my 'normal' DVD player

So, should I change my hardware choices? What about 2 150s? Or a 500? And then use a MediaMVP to provide TV-out? Anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hugh, my needs are the same as yours. I think my plan is to go with two 150s and then either go with an XCard for TV out, S-video out from a good Video card or I found a DVI-to-component adapter which will let me utilize the component input on the TV with hopes of good playback. Mostly my conern is having GREAT playback in live TV mode, I tend to think the XCard with it's hardware decoder would be the way to go.

We have Liftoff!

I finally got both the 150 and 350 seeing signal and recording at the same time. Whooopppeeeee!!!

How? I uninstalled the 150 in the Windows hardware manager, rebooted, let Windows reinstall the drivers - no love.
I finally took a hint from another thread and swapped the slots the boards were in (again). I'd tried that once but it didn't solve anything. This time it did. When I booted, Windows again wanted to install the drivers.

Now, both cards see a signal and record just fine. Oh, losing my 'net connection was solved by installing a signal booster from RadioShack. There are two issues remaining:

1 - the remote doesn't work. That seems to be hardware issue that we all hope will be resolved.
2 - I still haven't hooked the computer up to the TV so I don't know if TV-out works. Since that's a minor issue for me, I'm not in a rush to get that working.
