I opted not to use VideoRedo to cut commercials but ran the file into the Catalyst video converter and converted to a divx and a 720p H.264 and both seem to play fine and have no video sync.

Thanks for trying that out. As a stopgap, I ran a video compression and copied the audio across without compression (ac3 I assume). There's a very slight lag that I wouldn't have noticed if I weren't looking for it, so it's passable.

Somewhere in mediacoder settings there's an option to delay the audio, so I might try that too, assuming the delay is constant.

I've been using the video converter that's part of AMD's Catalyst, formerly called Avivo. It's fast and very good using Stream but I can try something else if you prefer.

I couldn't test the catalyst converter back when this thread was active due to a corrupt CCC install that I couldn't seem to undo, but I'm using it now in Win7 and it is dreamy. GPU acceleration? Stunning. With A's video converter (frontend, gui), I can even set up a profile close to what I normally use and batch convert. I'm using DivX instead of XviD, but beggars can't be choosers. Anyway, thanks for cluing me into that. So far, it has no troubles with any of my ABC-trouble files.

Glad it's working for you. If you care to share your profile and batch info, I'd love to play with it myself.
I'm not a fan of divx and feel they've gotten worse in the last year. Now I think they were purchased by Rovi (who bought Sonic and Roxio) and their latest converter is so slow it's embarrassing.

I'm conflicted in what to use. I haven't used divx myself since I first started processing video. But one perk to using xvid was that most out-of-box hardware (like a set-top dvd player) that supported divx also play a vanilla xvid encode. So, out of the options available, divx seemed okay. A's frontend can be found here, if you don't already have it.

You may not find my settings attractive, and I'm still experimenting with bitrates to get the filesizes I'm accustomed to. Generally my target file will be 350MB per 42 minutes of video and 720x400-720x480 in res. I suspect most folk around here are a little more HD-oriented, but scaling that up doesn't really bother me. Until last year I watched all my TV on a 8 year old 15" CRT monitor, so my standards aren't that high. My bitrates will be somewhere between 1000avg,1500peak and 1200avg,1800peak, based on the last run I did. I guess the AMD converter is running a single pass, that might affect the quality I'm used to (my tastes may be lofi, but I do have limits), we'll see.

have a recording to test? often with troubled files ii find skipping first few seconds makes everything work properly, but ya never know..
i see similar weirdness with abc here, missing frames or something that makes it just not smooth like all the others..
but i've never had any problems converting...[except the bad info at start of file, and then only occasionally]

i still fail to see how dropping frames allows more commercials,it's not like they can alter time or anything..lol

I usually lose about the first 4 minutes of buffer time from each file for any I keep and compress.

AMD video converter + the frontend is working nicely enough - no lag on any tests and quality is acceptable. If there's a big downside, I'm not seeing it. 2 pass encoding w/ autogk on my sys can take hours and this takes 15 minutes, so any dip in quality at least comes with some benefit.

In the frontend, I selected GPU encoding, decoding and a few other GPU items. Other settings attached.
