Ripped a dvd. sound is distorted (when top of dynamic range) in MP4 and avi format Sounds clean on vlc but not through NPVR.

What playback system is used? I think it is native windows, but sounds clean with windows media player too.

Can anybody help?

NPVR just asks windows to play the file with whatever splitters and decoders windows wants to use; there are no settings within NPVR that control playback of those file types. if you look in NPVR.log after playing a file, the filters used in the graph are listed.

Johnsonx42 may be saying all I'm about to say does not apply given your file type (and he knows a LOT more than I do). However, it sounds to me like the key for you will by trying a variety of different audio decoders in the nPVR setup "decoders" section. If you can play a file with VLC and Media Player without problems, it pretty well rules out a hardware issue. VLC uses its own decoders. You might be able to see what decoder Media Player is using by right clicking the playing video, selecting "show list", then right clicking the file and selecting "properties". That does not always work for me though. You might also try using GraphEdit in order to find out which decoders Media Player is using to play back the file. In either case, you can then set up nPVR to use those same video/audio decoders.

Alternatively, you might just try a bunch of different options. I find that you actually need to systematically vary the video and audio decoder as some times the video decoder affects the way the audio decoder works (some combinations work well when others do not...so don't just rule out an audio decoder if you try it and it does not work well unless you also try it with other video decoders).

yes, I am saying the decoders listed in Settings->Decoders do not apply to file types other than .ts. In the (very) old days playing a file in Windows Media Player would do the same thing that NPVR does, just ask DirectShow to play the file. Now Media Player has it's own internal codecs and splitters, much like VLC, so it's no longer a good test. You can download Media Player Classic (http://mpc-hc.org/) which does use the default codecs for the media type; it also comes with a pile of splitters and decoders, so merely installing it may correct your problems.

your other choice is to install hoborg's SAF6 (http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post414049), which will almost surely solve your issues.

DirectShow uses the filters with the highest merit when playing a file, download an editor for file merit (can't remember the names, but there are several) and change the merit of codecs until you find one that works good.
