I have been using GBPVR on my PC for several months. Due to my computer illiteracy, this forum has been very helpful in getting it running. I just bought a MediaMVP and connected it directly to my PC using a crossover cable. I followed all the instructions including disabling the DHCP client. The GBPVR continues to work on my PC, and the MediaMVP works perfectly on the TV using the MVP software. However, I can't get GBPVR to work on my TV. I've stopped the MediaMVP server software and set the GBPVR config "number of servers to autostart" to 1, 2 and 3, but no luck. I've also opened the GBPVR MediaMVP server manually, but still no luck. The TV screen reads "Failed to locate GUI server". Since it works using the MVP software, I'm assuming that I've configured the GBPVR incorrectly somewhere.
Any suggestions?

I thought the MVP needed a DHCP server in order to communicate over the network? If you disable the DHCP server, how does it know where to send its requests for info?

Hi Jerry.

This may very well be a networking issue, and there are different posts addressing that - try doing a search or maybe one of the net-hardcore guys come to the rescue...

However, I had a similar problem in this thread .

My conclusion so far has been that is is one of the plugins I had installed that ruined it (see last post in above thread). I basically did a clean install and copied over just the .mdb files to get access to the old recordings again. DO NOT copy the config.xml.

If you have installed any plugins, I suggest trying the below procedure.

As you state you are "computer iliterate" you can follow these steps:
  1. Rename the current gbpvr program directory
  2. Download the latest version (0.91.12) as some of the recent ones had MVP issues
  3. Install into the default directory
  4. Copy the .mdb file from the renamed directory to the fresh one - replace the one already there
  5. Start the configuration program
  6. Set up the recording directories and what else got 'lost' due to the reinstall
  7. Set autostart MVP servers to 1
  8. Confirm and exit
  9. Make sure the Haupp. services are set to maual start
  10. Restart the PC (not really necessary, but anyway ;-)
  11. After the boot has completed turn on the MediaMVP
  12. Cross fingers and wait ;-)

If you don't succeed or anything else goes wrong, you can always rename your original directory back again.

Good luck!

According to the instructions, the DHCP server needs to be disabled when connecting to the PC via crossover cable, as opposed to going through a network.

Hi Jerry430,

The MVP will look for a DHCP server (by default) to get its network IP address. I think some of the hauppauge software will let you set it manually, but anyway.

Enable the DHCP server on your PC. It doesn't matter that it's direct via a crossover cable or not, a DHCP client (the MVP) will "search" the network for a DHCP server.

Give it a try, what do you have to lose?

The MVP needs a DHCP server, it doesn't care which it uses, as long as the IP given to it is valid.

I forget where I read it, but if the MVP is unable to find a DHCP server, it manages to connect to the Hauppauge server over a special port. The Hauppauge software acts as a simple DHCP server for the MVP only in this fashion.

So it will appear to work using the Hauppauge software in the absence of a real DHCP server. sub would know if he mimic'ed this behavior, but my guess would be no.

Thanks to all for your replies. I've tried pretty much everything that was suggested but still no luck. I even uninstalled both the Hauppauge and GBPVR software. I've read that GBPVR can run without the Hauppauge software, so I installed GBPVR alone thinking maybe the Hauppauge software was conflicting with it. No luck. Then I reinstalled Hauppauge. Pursuant to one suggestion, I copied the Dongle.bin (whatever the hell that is) from the Hauppauge to GBPVR and, lo and behold, GBPVR came up on the TV. I scrolled through it (TV guide, video library) and attempted to view a video. Poof! Gone. No luck getting it back. It looks like I'm going to be stuck with the Hauppauge software, which I'm just beginning to realize is far inferior to GBPVR.
The only thing left that I can think of is connecting to my PC differently. I'm currently connected directly from the MediaMVP to my PC via a crossover cable. Would it be worth it to buy a router and ethernet cable and go about it that way?

Thanks to all, especially Nia & Tipstir, for your help. I loaded version 09112 last night and up it came. It seens a bit unstable, but at least I have something to work with now.
Thanks again
