I have recorded a few shows with GBPVR and it all worked fine. The problem is that my recordings are flawed, the are nice and sharp for a few seconds and then they are pixelated. I am not sure what is happening. I took a couple of screen captures of the recorded video on my main PC so you guys could see it.

What do you guys think? Other mpegs play back fine on both machines, it's just the recorded ones that are f00ked.

Just curious, what bitrate. Also what resolution? Those screenshots are odd resolutions (to me anyway) PAL or NTSC? And does the card match?

I had playback set for VMR7. Now it is set for VMR9. I recorded on "Medium" in GBPVR. Resolution is 720x480, 7200/3500 VBR. Audio is set at 224 bit rate, 48kHz.

The screen shots are odd because I just did a screen shot in WMP on another PC and cropped it. I am using NTSC.

I just got the PVR-150 on Wednesday, so I am pretty green. I had a ATI TV Wonder Value before and it was Ok, but I wasn't really all that impressed. That is probably before BYOPVR was really starting to take off.

I recorded Battlestar Galactica earlier and it seems fine. Beetle Juice that I recorded yesterday is still fubar. I am kinda wondering what the heck is up.

I checked my CPU load and it is at 50-60% when playing back video, which is way to high in my mind. I read the thread about DX9c causing some issues and I installed the DX9b quartz.dll in safe mode, but it didn't help my CPU loads at all.

I am using Stiky's MPEG-2 Codec. I couldn't play the recorded MPEG's on any machine I had until I installed that. I am definately a codec n00b as well, so feel free to bash me in the head. =)

Do you still have Hauppauge's software loaded? If so try to open one of your shows with wintv2000 and play it there.

Tipstir,

Thanks for the reply. I think you are on to something about the recording being my problem. That makes sense.

I am using a 1000MHz spitter and the cable guy made me up three cables at the time he installed it. One from the wall to the splitter, from the splitter to my VCR (now my PVR-150), and one from the VCR to my TV. He told me not to use cheap cables.

I have been recording on Medum at 720x480. I have a couple of questions about the bit rates.

1. Variable or Constant?
2. How high can I go before I a will not see any further improvement?

I haven't tried moving my PVR-150 to the last slot yet...

Also, I know just about nothing about codecs and how to view, install, remove and specify which ones I am using.

I am going to record a couple of things on HIGH and see how it goes...

Thanks again!

I still have the Hauppauge software loaded. WInTV2000 doesn't display live TV and there is no option that I can find that lets me open a previously saved show. Actually, it looks pretty lame even if it could do those things...

Am I missing something?

Just drag and drop an mpg-clip onto the the wintv2000 window and it should start showing it.

I had something less drastic than that happening. The image would start out fine, pause for justa second, then get a really bad motion blur effect.

I never did solve the problem entirely, I just beat it. The problem was a combo of playing w/ the Huap tweak settings, and adding the Cyberlink MPEG encoder (to try their demux). I had tried the dynamic setting for motion/spatial filtering for the 150 to see how it would handle it. It handled it like crap, as I kind of suspected it would. So I set it back.

The problem was that pause was the setting going back to the dynamic setting. Try as I might, it wouldn't let me chaneg the setting. It didn't matter what decoder I used.

Finally, I uninstalled WinDVD (that had the cyberlink encoder, which I wasn't thrilled w/ anyway), and the Intervideo decoder worked fine and kept the settings. Later, I went back to nVidida, and it's fine again, too.

The bottom line is I think you have a conflict, filter, or an effect kicking in unexpectedly. I couldn't begin to tell you what or where to look. If you want to see if this is happening, you could try other decoders to start, and maybe uninstall all but ones you are trying. You could also turn off anything that is doing post-processing like ffdshow or dscaler.

check this out:
http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/bitrate.html

Your highest bitrate you can go before you're "wasting your time" is about 8Mbps. I set mine to VBR 6.5Mbps, 8.0Mbps. That seems great to me. I've tried experiments where I've gone higher and can't tell a difference at all. I'm on standard analog cable so feel free to do your own experimenting...
