Return to Render -- Just what renderer am I using?
Posted by: Ommina - 2011-09-30, 03:44 AM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (16)

I've been going through the list of video renderers (which apparently isn't a word), trying to find which gives me the best picture.

So far, ERV gives me the best picture, but no OSD.
VMR9 was mostly acceptable, but HD content has jagged lines where they should be nice and straight.
VMR7 was much the same, though it seemed to be a bit more jaggly.
Overlay actually gave me a better picture than both VMR7 and VMR9, although not quite as good as EVR. But OSD worked.

Ok, fine, but I'm using XP. Which, as I understand it, doesn't support ERV in the first place. So my best picture is coming from a renderer that, apparently, I don't have. The log states "Adding EVR renderer", so, presumably, it is being changed to something else somewhere in DirectShow land. Would it drop all the way back to Overlay (and if so, why wouldn't OSD work)?

Is there something I can do to improve the video quality I get via VMR9? (Further, I note that VMR7 on this machine gives me substantially better quality than VMR7 upstairs. Which is interesting, but I don't know what to do with it.)

I'm open to any suggestions. I need OSD, so I'm actually using overlay now. Which, I guess, is fine if that does the job, but I'd really like to better understand what is going on.

As always, many thanks to all.

  PCH too hot
Posted by: pcostanza - 2011-09-29, 09:01 PM - Forum: MVP & NMT - Replies (5)

My hard drive appears to have died in the PCH and I think it's due to the heat. I've kept it ventilated and away from other hot devices but it still gets too hot. I'm not likely to put another drive in it and can survive without one but I've wondered if anyone has any ideas on how to keep this thing cooler. Even without a drive in it, it's just too hot.

Slight discrepancy displaying mapping with multiple xmltv sources.
Posted by: martint123 - 2011-09-29, 08:10 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (1)

No big deal, but confused me for a moment or 10.

With a single tuner device (dvb-t2 in this case) I have two xmltv EPG sources, one for SD and one for HD channels (a left over from gbpvr).
In the list of channels in 'devices' the SD channels appear first and the HD ones at the end (probably because of my tuning file).

Double clicking on an SD channel shows the correct mapping of the xml file and channel.
scrolling down and double clicking on an HD channel still shows the old SD xml file and a blank channel mapping.
coming out of 'channels' and back in and double clicking the same HD channel shows the correct xml file and channel mapping.
Scrolling back up to the SD channels gives the same problem in that it shows the HD xml file and no mapping until exit and back into 'channels'.

It doesn't look like the logs contain anything of any relevance.

cheers,
Martin

MS Windows SBS Standard 2011 & NPVR
Posted by: 35mmslr - 2011-09-29, 03:01 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (5)

Is any one using (or has anyone tried) Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard for running a NPVR server?

I need to run a BES express server (just got the wife a Blackberry but dont want the BIS enabled account) so I need to run Exchange. SBS 2011 seems to be the easiest method and I dont want to virtualise a 64bit guest with server 2008 and an exchange box.

Thanks All.

DVB/ATSC EPG - Truncates First Letter?
Posted by: jksmurf - 2011-09-29, 01:33 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (21)

My XMLTV based schedule on one channel in html format finally ran out so I decided to try the DVB/ATSC EPG.

Seems to work OK, BUT it truncates the first letter?

How does this work? Is it possible to manipulate the DVB/ATSC EPG post-download? If yes, where is it stored?
The upper schedule is their web-schedule.

Countries and Frequency Scans - So many choices for Hong Kong?
Posted by: jksmurf - 2011-09-29, 05:12 AM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (8)

Just if you're cleaning up sometime, there's probably no need for both Hong Kong and Hong Kong SAR, the latter is probably the politically correct one ...
There's also a LOT of scan options, I would imagine 3#, (i) Hong Kong - All Frequencies and (ii) Hong Kong SAR and (iii) Hong Kong SAR - Quick Scan would probably do.

The 273.ini's seem to be older system? Can they be deleted?

Cheers

k.
