  HDHomerun vs Hauppauge DCR-2650
Posted by: ottoguy - 2011-09-19, 03:38 PM - Forum: Hardware - Replies (5)

Which is better? I see the HDHomerun has a 3 tuner option. I do max-out my 2 tuners sometimes. Or would 2 DCR-2650's be better? That way I could buy one now and one at a later date.

  Slow channel change
Posted by: WKleeven - 2011-09-19, 01:12 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (20)

I recently installed a dvb-c card. I saw that channel change was slow (on the server-pc), but thought it was due to the dvb-c card.
Today however I noticed it's slow too on the analogue card. Much slower than in 1.3.11, which I have still working.

Could it be due to the decoders?
I have MPEG2 video and H.264 video: microsoft DTV-DVD Video decoder
Video renderer: EVR

I don't understand what the logfile of the filtercheck means, so added it too.

API docs to help with plugin development?
Posted by: McBainUK - 2011-09-19, 12:52 PM - Forum: Developers - Replies (3)

Sub, have you considered creating Ghost Doc .chm files from the public interfaces and clases that plugin developers would be expected to commonly use? This can be a very easy way of creating reasonable documentation if the source files are already XML commeted?

background: I've been looking at the Plugin Development section of the wiki, especially the (work in progress) API Reference section.

NPVR Crashing Exiting Freeview HD Channels
Posted by: Lao Pan - 2011-09-19, 11:14 AM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (5)

Sub
From the time that you produced this patch http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post415842 in the previous version of NPVR, I have had a problem with crashes when going back to the epg from Freeview HD channels.
This only happens on HD using the PCTV nano stick (930e?) - not on DVB-T SD which normally uses the Compro E700 tuner.
If another HD channel is recording this doesn't happen otherwise its about a 1 in 3 chance of a crash. Always the logs just show a single entry "Escaping" then nothing.
Then its out with the keyboard to try to get task manager to shut down NPVR which usually takes several attempts (Reset button if it's the wife!)

Unfortunately I can't provide crash dumps for a couple of weeks - just moved and no internet at moment - even this message is over dial-up at the office  - just managing to keep the patches up to date - I am on 2.2.6.

  Button Order
Posted by: imilne - 2011-09-19, 09:35 AM - Forum: Wishlist - Replies (4)

In GBPVR, when you select a recording, the popup window's buttons are listed:
- Play, Resume, Delete, Close

In NPVR, however, they're:
- Close, Play, Resume, Delete

To me, playing a recording is the most likely thing a user would want to do when selecting one. I'd love to see "Play" back at the top please?

It would also be nice - as an option - to be able to hide the Close buttons (and the ".." up navigation icons in the libraries) for those of us who always use a remote to do this (via ESC).

NextPVR on a VM, or a VM host..
Posted by: psycik - 2011-09-19, 04:03 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (9)

So I've been thinking about what I'd like to do with my system.

Currently my PVR (as per the specs below) in sitting in the lounge in a pretty generic black case next to the tv. Looks like a sub TBH. Bwhaha I just laughed at my own pun - hi sub!!

Anyway. I also have a Windows Home Server 2011 server. Currently with 4 x 2 TB disks, 2 are RAID 1 mirrored, and 2 are standalone. Windows Home Server 2011 is the base OS, with Vmware Server 2 on it running a Windows 7 VM (my primary desktop), an ubuntu server (proxy server) and 2 windows 2003 servers (one for general utilities, and one for more media based stuff - plex, itunes etc).

As it's now maxed out with drives, my next move would be to add a Lian-Li 5 Drive RAID enclosure, giving me another 8 TB or storage (I'.d possible canniblise some of the other 2tb drives into this enclosure).

This led me to thinking about how well would a NextPVR recording service do either on the bare metal, or utilising a USB tuner and a HDHomeRun a nextpvr instance in a VM.

How much would the VMs both CPU and IO affect the recording capabilities of next pvr, would this be a stupid move, and should I keep both machines seperate or would it be fairly safe to combine the two systems. I generally have a couple of shows recorded each day, client access would be evenings and night times, server backups etc during the day (only because the WHS server is turned off over night - this would be moved to overnight with the server being on 24x7).

Thoughts?

Recording fails but only on one channel (live viewing still works)
Posted by: dshoup - 2011-09-18, 11:57 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (5)

I have 3 tuner cards and all 3 of them are having trouble recording a specific channel. I have been recording this channel with these tuner cards for several years without any problems. Lately, it has stopped recording properly. I can still watch the channel live through GBPVR. Most other channels can still be watched/recorded without any problems (there are a couple that have failed in the past, but I rarely watch anything on them so it has never bothered me). I use dvr-ms files (with the Microsoft DVR-MS DBA multiplexer) because the .ts files do not play well on my computer.

When the recording starts on this problemed channel, a 6kb file is created and comskip starts. Several seconds later, a second file with the same name as the recording (plus a “-1”) is created. It usually stops at 6k in size as well.

I’ve tried several things to fix this. I started by rescanning and mapping the problemed channel to the new tuning info. I cannot see anything different in the tuning request data, but this work for a while. However, the tuner assignment always eventually went back to a copy of the channel earlier in the list of channels on the channel mapping and the problem would reappear (this happened without me doing it…recording problems would happen and I would check the config utility to find the tuning request set to the first instance of the channel rather than the second, more recently created one). Perhaps this is a sign that the tuning info really was the same and it worked just due to coincident.

Given that there were multiple listings of the channels from multiple scans in the channel mapping program, I also tried deleting all 3 tuner cards and adding just one device. This did not work…I still have problems recording even after completely getting rid of all the old data and only adding one device. I’ve attached logs in case they help.

I have major codec problems on WinXP that have prevented me from upgrading to nPVR, so sorry to post to a legacy program’s forum, but I’m hoping someone can help me solve this problem so I can hang on with GBPVR another year before I upgrade (plan to get a Win7 machine then).

  DCR-2650/Cablecard Dilemma
Posted by: soccerdad - 2011-09-18, 11:55 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

I am at a crossroad and am not sure where to go. I have long dreamed of being able to easily record anything I pay for and came close to getting an HDPVR. It kills me to tell my wife we can't record something or have to record SD analog (mine sucks). I did not really like the blasting/firewire solution and held out for the cablecard. On the surface, cablecard is the cleanest solution around. Two tuners and no blasters. Cool. But I did not understand the impact that the broadcast flags would be on my system. Virtually all channels on my system are copy-once except for the main networks. I am very impressed with the new built in solutions for the DCR-2650, but am only able to use it for a minumum amount of recording. I found a program, wtvwatcher to convert the non-protected wtv files to dvrms files so comskip will work. Martin's network recorder work is cool and a way to get the flagged files recorded. But to play them back, the only solution is to do it in WMC7 and then come back to NPVR.

Another long standing goal has been to use the PVR program as our gateway to live TV and recording. This worked in the analog days, but I have only been using GBPVR/NPVR for recording/playback and have had to use a STB for normal viewing.

So the dilemma. NPVR can do much of the recording, but not the playback of the drm stuff. WMC7 can do most everything I want, but I don't have an xbox for an extender. And, well,... its WMC7. I have spent so many years on this forum, I is REALLY hard for me to even think of using WMC. But the WAF is critical and the STB and PVR solution is kind of limiting and I just don't see a nice way at this point to go back and forth between WMC and NPVR. I own the DCR now, and probably should have looked into all of this more before buying it. With the new support for switched digital tuning adapters, it works really well in WMC7.

So for now, I am working on setting up the WMC7 system and see how the wife likes it. I will keep digging and testing the stuff on this great forum. I have learned so much over the years and your patience has been unbelievable. This is my hobby and it the thought of moving to WMC7 leaves me kind of empty. I will set up a test box with some old tuners and keep up with what you are doing but I will explore WMC for now. Hopefully we will get ATT or Verizon to offer stuff in our area. I hear they don't use copy flags at the moment. But who knows.

Thanks for listening to my tale. And thanks for all the help.

Soccerdad

  Expanding NPVR.db3
Posted by: mvallevand - 2011-09-18, 11:21 PM - Forum: Developers - Replies (15)

Sub would it be problematic if I was to add my own node to event_details in the SCHEDULED_RECORDINGS table after a file has been recorded? I'd like to be able to update Season and Episode to valid numbers, plus I'd like to add a new node to show that I have searched it.

  Forum and Plugin Availability
Posted by: steeb - 2011-09-18, 11:03 PM - Forum: NPVR Documentation - Replies (83)

Dear all,

I have been thinking about this for a long, long time. In fact I got frustrated about this in the GB-PVR days.

I could be wrong though so any posts saying steeb, it is your problem, OK, it is Big Grin

I have recently been in talks with sub about this off forum.

I do not think that the current layout for plugins and skins and utilities works very well.

I would not be looking at this time for me to suggest what would work better. I could offer suggestions to the community but they would be pointless without even knowing what the community thought....

what does the community think?

cheers

steeb
