I was thinking about this on the way to work today. Would it be possible run a complete WinXP installation with GB-PVR booting from a USB flash drive (say a 1 or 2GB unit)? You'd still need a hard drive to record shows to, but that could be spun down while not recording or playing back.
From browsing the basic specs, I'm thinking if the price is good (not likely I know) (edit: now noticed £199 - not too bad!) , this could be a potential MVP killer for me! (40Gb cache hmmmm.. potential!)
So Sub, anyone, what are our chances of GBPVR + Apple TV?
I'm confused by the install process at 'create capture source'.
I only want to use one of the tuners of a HDHR with QAM, and set it up to schedule recordings. End result being either a .ts or .dvr-ms file.
None of the .ini files has the HDHR included, but the bda.ini file does have a section labeled [FAKE-ATSC], showing what look like sample QAM channels.
Is what I want to do possible? If yes, some hints to get me started would be appreciated.
I have been a gbpvr user almost 2 years now, so I have a little experience working with Plextor's video converter. For those who have a Plextor unit (I have a PX-TV402U) packed away in the closet, It will still work on the latest release...1.1.5 . I actually think the quality is better than my WinTV PVR2 USB2 unit.
Although I have had issues, I have none that currently have not been resolved. With my current setup specifically, The MCE 2005 remote plugin gave me problems.
After setting everything up on my new system (old was a amd xp 1700 512g ram) after a recording, I could not change channels, I would have to restart the recording service. Then when the next recording was scheduled, it would not change channels until a system restart, and this cycled over and over. This is almost reminiscent of the issue with the hauppage remote and blaster issues I have read about. Not looking for a solution, I have since started using HIP, and that solved the issue. (Have since moved to the Time Warner DVR box, and now change channels using the firewire connection)
Other things that gave me a fit with this card to watch for, is that depending on how you load your software, if you use system default for a decoder in playback setup it may use divx, Netradio does not like this, and you have to toggle netradio to use windows media in the config.xml file, in order to get it to work. I also use the 2.3.0.5 driver downloaded from the Europe site instead of US, and did away with WinDVR software and instead left WinDVD Creator (as mentioned in the wiki), and loaded Plextools LE version 3.12 along with the lame_dshow encoder for MP3 audio instead of mpeg2 audio.
Removing WinDVR seems to have done away with the issue I was having where if I restarted the system, or came out of hibernation mode, gbpvr could not find channel 3, and just showed static until I went into WinDVR started it, shut it down, then restarted gbpvr.
Also in the capture card quality setting, medium seems to be the only setting to be able to choose, so I change the bitrate to deal with that instead of trying to get Low, High, to work.
To deal with timeshifting not working while capturing divx, I change it to mpeg2 and trancode to divx later, this method also allows me to use comskip, and comclean, or make a dvd for a friend. (I burn divx dvd's to play in my standalone divx player/dvd recorder as a standard).
These are just a few of the things that I have done to get my plextor unit running smoothly, which I used because I wanted to be able to fit a 4 hour race on dvd, sacrificing as little quality as possible, and honestly, nothing against hauppage, but using the same decoder side by side, no matter which, video looks better on the plextor, but to be fair, didn't use tools like hauppage tweak or anything to play with my PVR2 unit.
Great job to all of the developer's. Thank you for an outstanding product.
I have some old computer, not that old, just older than my newer one :p, along with a wired MVP.
The old pc is small enough that I want to bring it out next to my TV and MVP. Shorter cable from pc to MVP. Now I am having a very hard time with choosing a PVR card. I would like to be able to watch and record at the same time but it seems my only choice there is a pvr500 or two pvr150's (a little more cost but thats not my concern).
So I am looking for your input about achieving my goal of watching and recording simultaneously
I used a utility (rename recoding) to rename my files with title - sub_title format. Ever since then I cannot play some of the files. I get an error when the osd tries to display. The contents of the programme table was not altered, only the filenames... the file will play fine as long as I do not try to bring up the osd. The error occurs on the console or mvp. In the past errors of this nature were a database problem with "illegal" characters, however this time I do not see any difference between a selection that allows the osd to display, and one that does not.
I've had a bad week with my development machine. A few days back my 8 year CRT monitor went "pop" and refuses to work. RIP. New 24" Dell LCD arrived today (awesome price).
This afternoon I fire up the PC to ghastly burning smell coming from my X800 AGP card (new monitor not plugged in yet). Since then, powering up the machine results in the fans spinning but not much else. Swapping out parts to other machines I've determined my RAM and hard drive are OK (and hopefully PCI cards). So its either the motherboard or CPU or both that have bitten the dust. I dont have any other socket 939 machines, so no way to confirm which of these is broken.
I'm working on the assumption I'm going to need to buy a new motherboard and CPU. I've been using an AMD X2 4600, but am thinking I'll pick up Intel Core Duo E6700 plus motherboard. Can anyone recommend a specific motherboard? ideally lots of slots, preferreably most being regular old PCI since this is what most capture devices use.
BTW, are there any fellow New Zealander's here that have wholesale accounts that could help out with cheap parts?
Hey guys, I'm new to the whole TV Tuner thing. Someone gave me (as a gift) a TV Tuner card, it is a Norwood Micro (CompUSA brand) card, based on the Conexant BlackBird reference design. Under GBPVR config, it is detected as a Conexant Blackbird. My problem is that I have set up EPG, set up the Tuner, and set up the remote for changing channels. However, I can't watch live tv! When I have "Live Preview" mode on, I click "Live TV" and the following error message pops up:
Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
Some googling revealed that this is usually cause by two things: You don't have a software MPEG decoder installed (This card doesn't have a hardware MPEG decoder) and that this is also a glitch common when using a Blackbird card. It said you should disable "Live Preview" mode, but it also says this glitch was fixed in the latest version of GBPVR. When I disable live preview mode, I click live tv and the screen goes black. It says "Starting timeshift TV mode. Please wait." and then I get an error saying "Error: Failure playing back file".
For the MPEG decoder, I have tried the PowerDVD 7 decoder and the free DScaler Mpeg2 Video Decoder. Both give me the same result.
Can anyone help me, please? I am at a complete loss as to what is wrong, and the software that came with this (crappy and generic) tuner is royal piece of sh*t, I am anxious for a better software solution without having to pay for something like BeyondTV.
