MVP resets connection during long file playback (includes possible fix)
Posted by: navyguy - 2005-05-10, 05:32 AM - Forum: MVP & NMT - No Replies

This is another problem that I ran into while trying to get DivX playback to work for me. I was getting in the gbpvr.exe.log:

5/9/2005 7:44:43 PM.359 VERBOSE [34] MVP data taking too long, connection must have been dropped!

and

5/9/2005 7:44:43 PM.375 VERBOSE [35] MVP media connection recycle requested
5/9/2005 7:44:43 PM.562 ERROR [34] MVPWorkerThread - Connection lost, waiting a new one

Now for the long explanation of why I think this happened, to me at least, and how I fixed it:

The majority of network devices and network cards default to 'auto-negotiate' for link speed and duplex mode at installation. This is great in theory but the problem with this is in a multi-vendor environment auto-negotiate doesn't work very well in actuality. And even when it does work it adds overhead on rebuilding a dropped network connection (which can lead to choppy playback or even MVP timeouts/reboots if it takes long enough to rebuild the connection).

We can't, unless there's a way I haven't found yet, manually set the duplex and speed on the MVP. However you can set this on your computer and on your switch if you are using a switch (not applicable to most hubs which is why some people report better results when they change out their switch for a hub which is counter-intuitive at face value but actually is true as it removes some of the auto-negotiation from the mix)

What I have working now is setting my laptop's network card manually to 100Mbit Full Duplex. Even if the MVP is trying to auto-negotiate this will still have better results (I'm using a crossover cable) as the auto-negotiate process (if the MVP is trying to auto-negotiate which I'm pretty sure the MVP is attempting) will see the computer as 100FD only and set itself to that much quicker than trying the full negotiation process.

So short version:
If using a switch: manually set all ports involved to the max ability of the device attached to that port
On the MVP: nothing can be done that I know of
On the PC: manually set your network card to the same setting you set your switch port. or if using a x-over cable manually set your network card to 100Mbit Full Duplex (although earlier versions of the MVP might not be capable of this, might need some trial-and-error here) or if using a hub manually set your network card to whatever your hub is rated at (10/100Mbit & FD/HD)

And after all that I still had to roll back to the Hauppauge 2.4.23038 because the 2.4.23104 would not create a stable link at any level on my laptop's network card manually configured (I'm using the dongle.bin from Hauppauge not GB-PVR which includes the network support on the MVP). And after each speed/duplex configuration I tried I had to power cycle the MVP to get it to come back up.

One thing to note is that the only setting I found to work with smooth playback is to run at 100Mbit Full Duplex. All the other settings didn't give me enough speed to not stutter during playback or just flat out refused to make a connection. However YMMV as this can and will be affected by cable quality (mine is just an off the shelf x-over cable) so someone else may be able to run just fine at 100Mbit Half Duplex or even one of the 10Mbit configurations if they have higher quality cabling.

If anyone knows how to manually set the MVP please post here as I'd like to know how if it is possible.

Hope this helps!

  Tuning two capture cards PVR-150
Posted by: Doz5 - 2005-05-10, 03:42 AM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (6)

I was wondering How can I use the tuning assistant to tune both PVR150 cards?

I tried to tune using the assistant and only one card works great and the other is not tuned properly.

The way I use it is selecting my card PVR150, then USA, then cable TV and press OK.

Am I using the tuning assistant the way it's intended to be used?

Thank you

  Playback on MVP Choppy Suddenly
Posted by: Landru - 2005-05-10, 01:47 AM - Forum: MVP & NMT - Replies (10)

Up until this weekend, all has been working fine. But since Saturday, playback on the MVP has gotten very choppy. Playback on the host computer is fine. Nothing has changed.

I've done all of the natural things - rebooted the host, rebooted the MPV, restarted the complete network. I'm at a complete loss of what to do next.

Are there any suggestiogn out there? Thanks!

  Recording/playback problem
Posted by: mpoling - 2005-05-10, 01:36 AM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (3)

Hi guys! Thanks for the previous help, it works great except for one thing...
When I record a show (say a 1 hour tv show), sometimes it plays back nicely. Other times, it plays back 30 seconds of it and then kicks back to the menu. When I go to look at the MPEG files in the recording directory, I ALWAYS find that these shows have been broken up into multiple MPEGS rather than a single one. SHows that have been recorded into a single MPEG playback just fine.
My question is, can I prevent GB-PVR from recording one show into multiple MPEGS (I mean, some of the parts are only 400 KB long!) and how can I play them back if not?
Thanks again!
Mike

"My Videos for dummies Guide" needed
Posted by: jesse_breaker - 2005-05-09, 11:55 PM - Forum: Old Stuff (Legacy) - Replies (4)

One of the things I want my gbpvr setup to do, is to be able to burn a copy of say survivor that I recorded the night before and give it to a co-worker that missed it.

In the 'old" days, I would record it on vhs and then bring the tape in the next morning. In the new world of PVRing, I would like to be able to burn a copy to a dvd for giving out.

I understand from talking to a few of you on this board that the "My Videos" plug-in allows you to do this.

I took an attempt and installing and configuring this up, but I can't for the life of me figure this out.

I would appreciate it if someone could make a step by step 'walk-thru' on how to make this happen. I'm afriad I am losing a few too many brain cells in my old age Wink

Can anyone help?

PS. If someone is already doing what I want (ie. burning a copy of a TV show to DVD via gbpvr) without using My Videos plug-in I would be interested as well in hearing how this works.

Thanks Guys!

Intervideo / Cyberlink To Installed / LiveTV Crash?
Posted by: pmk - 2005-05-09, 07:30 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (5)

1. I get an error message saying Intervideo or Cyberlink is not installed. However I have both installed and can select them in the Config application?

2. When I click LiveTV it crashes with an "Error: Object Reference Not Set To A Reference Of An Object"?

Can anyone help with the above problems?

Using a LifeView FlyDVB-T on WinXP. An earlier release worked fine but I no longer have this setup so am using the latest version downloaded from the web site.

TIA

  ComSkip has stopped working?
Posted by: jjakober - 2005-05-09, 07:06 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - No Replies

I had ComSkip working correctly for the last couple of weeks, but recently it has stopped working. I checked the log files and this is what I get at the end of a recorded show:

5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.140 VERBOSE [35] Recording has passed endtime+padding. Stopping.
5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.140 VERBOSE [35] Stopping recording oid:1

5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.265 VERBOSE [35] RecordingStatus is now RecordingStatus.RECORDING_COMPETED
5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.265 VERBOSE [35] RecordingFactor.save()
5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.265 INFO [277] Post Processing thread starting...
5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.265 INFO [277] Running comskip on: Z:\Video\Desperate Housewives\Desperate Housewives_20050508_21002202.mpg
5/8/2005 10:04:00 PM.265 VERBOSE [35] Save(): Updated existing scheduled recording

To me this shows that ComSkip has started, but the ComSkip txt files never show up in the recorded shows folder. I can manually run ComSkip on the file and it works just fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
jjakober
