Hi chaps, am trying to access my computer externally to set recordings while I'm at work for eg., but can't seem to get it to work. There are several computers on my (small) local network, so I assume the problem may be in telling it how to go from the router's ip address to my specific computer?

I've got the external IP address (ie that of the router I presume) from whatismyip.com. (I assume it's the router's address as I get the same result from different computers.)

My PC currently has local IP address 192.168.1.4 (the .4 changes to .2 or .3 or. 5 depending on which computer boots first on my local network I guess, but I've tried those varients too.)

To logon externally I assumed that http://EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS.4:7647/gbpvr/guide.aspx should work? But it doesn't seem to. Am I being daft? (BTW not adding the ".4" doesn't work either)

Any suggestions gratefully received!

No that's wont work.

You probably need to fix the ip address of the machine with GBPVR (give it a static ip address either from the router, or type one in to the network connections). Most routers don't allow you to port forward to a machine name.

Then set up a port forward on your router from externalipaddress:port to localipaddress:7647

External port can be anything you like, but would prob make sense to keep it at 7647.

The other way to do it, is trickier to set up, but much more secure, is to tunnel in via ssh to your network then go from there. I use this second method, means I only ever have one port open to the internet.

Hope this helps.
