Sub,
I have made a shocking discovery with respect to the issues of the below thread:

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post324954

I just viewed some of the material in WMP11, because I wanted to see once more that the recordings were not the problem. I am now getting sound out of WMP11, which surprises me, because I thought it was up to GB-PVR to create the graphs.

But the important point is: playback of the files through WMP11 is flawless. The stuttering occurs only when played through 1.3.11. I will revert to the previous version, but I will wait to hear from you as to whether you desire any debug material.

I'm pretty sure it'll just come down to the combination of decoders/renderers you're using. These are the key directshow components that can cause this sort of thing if they dont work well together.

At the end of the day, GB-PVR doesnt do the playback itself, it just askes directshow to play the file, suggesting the decoders and renderers you've said you'd like to use. In theory, given the same combination of components as another app, you should get identical results.

That was my understanding, but it's also the limit of my understanding. I thought that, since the format is DVR-MS, there really were no options, unlike users of mpeg, where there seems to be a blizzard of choices. There is only one AC3 decoder in the system, namely, ac3filter.

Additional enlightenment would be appreciated.

To emulate what GB-PVR does for a .dvr ms file, download and run graphedit, use the 'Insert Filters' menu option to insert the following 'StreamBufferSource' filter, and select your file when prompted. Next insert the MPEG2 and AC3 decoders you have selected on the playback tab, none if you've got them set to 'system default'. Next insert the video renderer (2nd "Video Render" for overlay, "Video Mixing Renderer9" for VMR9, or "Enhanced Video Renderer" for EVR). Next insert the audio renderer you'd selected, or none if set to 'system default'. Lastly, right click on each output pin on the "StreamBufferSource" filter and select the 'render pin' option. You'll now have the graph that GB-PVR uses.

Thank you. I will try this in a bit. Installing a Phenom cpu now Smile

The problem is solved. In config, I switched the choice of video decoder from "system default" to "Intervideo non CSS decoder for Hauppage."

The result is perfection. All artifacts are completely gone; the video is perfectly smooth.
The other choice, "mpeg decoder", which I assume is Microsoft's, exhibits the problems I have been complaining about.

But, may I ask, does this suggest a minor bug in GB-PVR ? While WMP11 apparently recognizes the Intervideo decoder as the system default, GB-PVR apparently identifies the default as "mpeg decoder."

The Hauppage drivers were installed only once, in the spring of 2008. The appearance of the problem is coincident with installation of 1.3.11, though many Microsoft patches also came through between the two GB-PVR versions.

GB-PVR does not decide what the default is. Windows does that. GB-PVR has no idea what the default decoder is, and no way to know if that decoder is any good or not. I'm glad to hear you got your problem sorted though.

In future you'd be better to create a new post than go edit a post that you made half a day ago, since most people wont notice the update since it wont mark it as a new post.
