ok, here goes.

I've spent the last three nights reading FAQ's, forums, plodding along. I've gotten what I believe is tantalizingly close.

I will briefly describe what I've got and what's going on and wait for a more detailed request for information. Thanks in advance.

Windows machine running XP
Radeon Bravo 9600
SiliconDust HD Homerun
Comcast cable (QAM) feed
Schedules Direct EPG feed

The story so far:
-I have the HD Homerun setup (correctly, I believe) and am able to play the signal from my cable on my desktop with VLC.
-The HD Homerun setup went fairly painlessly.
-Spent a day trying to get GB-PVR running. Problem with my graphics card (I believe) Machine is about 5 years old. Fixed it with a Microsoft Net upgrade and several days of forum fishing.
-Was able to display PVRX2.
-Seemed to get EPG set up correctly.
-Was able to see TV Guide in PVRX2.
-Set up a recording.
-Folder was created, folder empty.
-Seems to me recording source was not setup correctly.
-more forum fishing.
-found this link: http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5449
-Seemed to work. Device now found in recording source.

-Problem: can no longer bring up TV Guide.
-Also, when I try to "Map digital channels to EPG Channels, this fails.
-Have played around with multiple configs.. no luck.
-Have decided to turn myself in here.
-Hope you feel I have made good faith effort before asking for help.

I see many times people are asked for log files to help diagnose. If this is true for me, please be specific (location and file name) as I have not been able to find FAQ telling what/where files are.

Thanks in advance. I'm not a tech genius but I'm not afraid to jump in. I think I'm close. Looking forward to 'A-ha!' moment.

Welcome to the forum, I know how frustrating it can be to be so close.....
Wrt the logs: just zip the files in the gbpvr\logs dir and post them here. So somebody can take a look. I myself have no experience with HD-Homerun so I pass.Smile

Hans,
Thanks for the speedy and polite reply.

logs are attached. I'm going to play around with moving the plug-ins while I wait for a reply.

And my version of GB-PVR is v1.3.11

In the mean time you might want to check the survival guide (if you didn't already):

One of the names you entered in your bda.ini file doesnt seem to match the filternames used by your HDHR.

2009-04-30 00:38:37.734 VERBOSE FindFilterByName failed to locate filter: Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuner 1015A0DE-0

Also, you may need to use the QAM ini manager utility to adjust the frequencies if its not finding any channels.

I am not currently using the second tuner. I want to prove my pipeline with as few pieces as possible to make it easier to diagnose.

Also, you may need to use the QAM ini manager utility to adjust the frequencies if its not finding any channels.

I've done this now. I tried al 3 options and rescanned every time. No change.
I've reattached the logs (after QAM.ini manager attempt) in case something changed.

I've done a complete uninstall/reinstall to see if I missed any steps, etc.
Still not working. But here are a couple of observations that may shed light, ort not. Just things I've noticed I don't understand.

-Task Bar GB-PVR icon 'show status' shows HD Homerun as sleeping.
-- I can't find any reference of that in the forums. How do I wake it up?
-TV Guide in GUI isn't responding, though EPG update worked.. However Search is working - it's accessing information and showing times. ??
-And some late breaking news...This link seems to have changed something for me, as the Digital channel mapping has done something this time:
http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5449

Step 7 I believe, this time, has changed something.
As the Digital channel mapping is working, I can see it manipulating the HD Homerun Manager

ok - definitely a breakthrough. Digital mapping pulled in a lot of data. But then it asked me to do the manual tuning - does anyone have any tips? I only recognized 3 or 4 names (all others marked unknown) and I wasn't sure if it was the HD or regular signal, so I just picked one.

I see the three that I mapped in the TV guide, and something happened/ locked up/ when I said watch now.

most importantly, the task bar icon changed color and the the recording status changed to Live TV ( I had clicked on that too, after I didn't see anything from selecting 'watch now' in the TV guide.

I'll attach my newest logs if anyone is following this.
Next issues are to figure out some trick to understanding how to do the manual tuning and how to get something to display.

All I can say is this: sleeping just means that it is not Recording or playing LiveTV.
For the rest you have to wait till someone (probably Sub) finds the time to look at it.

Step 7 in the linked guide enables digital cable QAM tuning (TUNING SPECIAL=1), so it's no surprise nothing worked before then - with that parameter commented out it was attempting to tune over-the-air (OTA) frequencies from an antenna.

When mapping the digital channels, you should be able to see the video in the little preview window, and hear the audio as well. You can double-click the preview window to make it bigger so you can see it.

If you can't see or hear, then you don't have the necessary audio/video codecs installed. For this country you need a mpeg-2 video decoder, an mp2 audio decoder and an AC3 audio decoder. There are many choices, but to get you started you can use MPV codec http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm and AC3Filter http://ac3filter.net/ (I think AC3filter will decode mp2 audio as well). Follow the instructions to get those two filters installed. Once installed and registered, make sure you select them on the Playback tab in config, exit config and go back in.

Next, for some additional help in mapping channels, go to the silicondust channel database here: http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels_us and key in your zipcode. It should show you the expected digital QAM channels (ignore the top half - that's for OTA) available from your cable provider.

Once you can see/hear the channels in the mapping dialog along with the info from the silicon dust database, carefully map the EPG channels to the tuner channels, and do it for BOTH tuners. GB-PVR uses the first tuner for recording, but uses the second tuner for LiveTV, so thinking you can just configure one tuner and get to the other one later will cause you grief. For any EPG channel that has no valid tuner mapping (whether it doesn't exist, you can't find it or if you just don't want to map it), make sure you disable the channel - you don't want ANY channels enabled that don't have proper tuning requests.

Oh, if you haven't done so already you should limit your Schedules Direct epg download to just the channels you'll actually receive/want to reduce clutter. Empty and Update the EPG in config after making any changes to your SD lineup.

Hope that helps.
