I capture some old VHS recording via an ATI 550 capture card (coax). Picture and sound are great when displaying the fixed channel feed, but becomes corrupted (more than the original, wich is not so great but stable) at times. The same excerpts may look ok when recorded again.

Thank you

FWIW In my experience, there are three possible sources of problem when you are digitising VHS video... The age and condition of the tape, the age and condition of the heads and the type of connection to your capture source.

If your tapes are old and haven't been played for a while, it can be worth doing an FF/RW of the complete tape to retension it (although if your tapes are in really poor condition, this can make them worse). It's also a good idea to clean your heads.

Just like when you are connecting your VHS player to a TV, co-ax will give the poorest quality signal since it's being converted to RF and then demodulated by the receiver. I got myself a Compro Videomate C200 for a capture source - I use composite cables, and get pretty good results.

I changed my coax for red yellow and white connections and everything is just fine.
