JonnyCam, thanks for your input. Many people are finding it a pain to upgrade the firmware on their blu ray players, on average the mainstream does not have the technical knowledge on how to do this and bad firmware upgrade can make the box useless. I also read that they use hdcp encryption. That is why I referenced that. I realize they use more encryption on the video stream. Strange that the industry is so paranoid that they keep changing the encryption.

I also read that the hdcp can ask for a new key periodically. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next year or two. Computer hackers don't like encryption lol. They see it as a challenge Smile

I'm going to call Comcast cable and see if they use hdcp on their boxes. But probably won't move in that direction for 6 months to a year.

even if they use HDCP on their boxes, they may not have the compinent output downsampled - and there should be no difference between HD component & HDMI (well, maybe a tiny difference digital to analog)

I haven't had a disc on my bluray player which would not play yet - and it's on the same firmware as when I purchased.
I think the last change they had was BD+ ?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - if you use yoiur raid-0 with the CaptureHD card, you may be able to cobble something together to capture uncompressed 720p & 1080i

Then encode to H264 at full res. Will take massive amounts of space, and needs a striped raid to have enough disc performance to capture that much info.

just the sound of that made me queasy.. capturing uncompressed 1080i.. like having a tooth pulled out without any anesthetic. gets the job done, but definitely not worth it Smile

depends on what you are wanting it for, and how much space you have (500 GB / hr I think)

Most capture programs can't seem to keep up with the frame rates & res.

The avermedia center does a decent job in capturing the 1080i input to HD mpeg2, just wish they had included an H264 encoder which could do better than 720x576.

Are you then recording the output? or is this just so an older TV will work correctly?
(I guess it doesn't matter, it's available to record if you want) - Just have to find a medium to record with (such as the HDPVR)
