Thanks Sub - I'd actually already downloaded this, but it's setting had no effect until I forcibly un-registered the Intervideo codecs - they seemed to be a bit screwy. We're getting somewhere...
Media Player now plays the files - yay! HOWEVER, Windows Movie Maker doesn't, so I still can't acheive my goal of editing my captures.. d'oh.
When I try to drag one of the movie files into the Movie Maker library/timetime, it says that it could not be opened as the appropriate codec is NOT installed, even though the CyberLink Audio/Video codecs are recognised and ticked (to be used) in the Tools > Options > Compatibility window.
The appropriate codecs are clearly installed and now set to preferred in the MS Video Codec Checkup Utility. At least well enough so that Media Player can sort itself out, so why can't Movie Maker? LOL.
I'm lost. As this isn't and never was a GBPVR issue, I'll stop guffing up these forums with my babble - but will let you know if I find a solution..
After even more digging, it seems that Movie Maker has a LOT of issues importing MPEG2 video. The most common suggestion is to convert to a WMV using a MM friendly codec, but AFAICT that will inevitably result in a loss of quality. Movie Maker can't even import an MS-DVR file, which seems REALLY bizarre.
If someone can point me in the direction of some 'Movie Maker friendly' MPEG2 codecs, I'd really appreciate it - as the CyberLink ones clearly don't work..
