recent choppy playback - help

my playback recently became choppy. I have made no changess to the system.

i guess the system needs maintenance. any advice on what system components should looked at get rid of the choppy playback.

I get this occasionally on both live TV and recordings. A reboot fixes it for me. I've never investigated to identify the cause. You might also try the DirectX version fix, discussed in the wiki here:

It is only in record video playback.

Live TV is smooth. DVD playback is smooth (ripped or directly off DVD). It is just MPEG recorded video playback.

And it only started a month or so ago.

My HTPC has been stable for almost a year - the last update I did was almost 6 months ago (if it aint broke dont fix it).

While it is still watchable (it only happens on a few scenes within an hour playback) it is annoying, and it does seem to be slowly getting worse.

Does pressing skip sometimes make it come smooth again? If so, this might be the quartz.dll thing discussed in the sticky thread.
