I have just built myself a client using an intel D210GLY2 motherboard. Unfortunately the onboard sis mirage graphics can't do the PVRX2 interface. I have therefore just brought a Nvidia 5200 PCI graphics card.

Anyway I am utterly shocked when i booted up with the 5200 inserted that my 80 Watt Pico PSU was not able to supply enough juice. How much energy does a 5200 draw?

Does anyone therefore know if any other PCI cards use less energy (I was wondering 9250)

Using the extreme overlcockers PSU calculator, it seems that they are both about the same (1 watt difference)
about 28 watts - but I saw from some google link that the max usage is 45W.

This link tells a different story though. The 9600 uses a lot less power (half) than the 9250. (and gives a nice picture with by-pixel interlacing)

How many watts is your system pulling with the onboard only? doe sit have optical drives etc?

Maybe changing it out to use a CF card to IDE would use a lot less power?
I saw some figures of the cf card using 0.05 /watts per GB when idle.

Thanks for the reply that link is an excellent read.

The motherboard draws around 25 watts (http://resources.mini-box.com/online/MBD...ption.html) although this review is for a D201gly where as I have a D201GLY2. I am using a laptop hard drive which I can't see drawing anymore than 5 watts. It has no optical drive. The onboard LAN is in use. So are 2 usb ports (keyboard and MCE remote) and that it is.

Replacing my hard drive with compact flash is a great idea - why didn't I think of that. Andf with the PCI interface it looks like I dont have many options 9250/5200 I may try a MX440. Does an ATI radeon 7000 work with the new PVRX2 interface.

And bloddy hell those ATI 2400HD dont draw much juice - I'll have to get one of those for my Sever/main TV box.

oh, might be a touch late...

I'm running a ATI 7000 PCI at the moment for the s-video out until I can find a more speedy solution with low powerdraw (on no budget!). All I can say is that it does run the PVRX2 interface, but is somewhat laggy... I wouldn't recommend you buy that card if you can avoid it.

Also - although I fear this is just my personal card - there are alot of artifacts on the video playback. I guess it's something to do with dodgy memory on the card, but it could be something else.

Thanks for the reply - I am surprised an ATI Radeon 7000 runs the PVRX2 interface at all.

In the end I decided to change the graphics card (rather then the PSU) I went for a Nvidia 6200 which is probably the fastest PCI card that is widely available. It is also made on FAB (nm) 110 where as the 5200 is made on FAB 150 so I am hoping it will use less energy - it should be here today/tomorrow so I will soon find out.

I have a pci 6200.
It works with the new interface, however you won't get any video acceleration with it using VMR.

Something to do with the PCI interface I think.

My celeron 3 1.4 ghz was running to high on the CPU.
When I switched to the old interface with overlay the cpu barely registered.
