Hi Guys,

I like to listen to old time radio shows in MP3 format. It's been working fine but tonight they wont play, it just exits back to the main menu. It's evidently a system problem as they wont play in Windows Media Player either.

Anyone seen this before? I tried running the re-register filters bat and it didn't help.

Which logs do I need to post?

Thanks!

pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx3.exe-native.log

And are you on 1.3.7? I remember there was an mp3 patch for 1.2.x or 1.1.x I can't remember.

Have you changed filters/renderers/decoders for audio lately? Or any other changes?

Yes, 1.3.7.

No changes have been made recently - I've been working overtime!

I do have Windows update turned on, I'm wondering if something in it broke something.

Here's the logs:

Do mp3's play in windows media player?

Yes your windows updates may have busted something....so while you may have been able to use your current settings, maybe now you have to change....

As I said in the first post - I'm pretty sure it's a system problem as Windows Media Player wont play them either, though WinAmp will just fine and I can move them to a pen drive and play them on another computer through Windows Media Player just fine. It just appears that the Windows Media Player got magically broke (I've been on overtime the last week or so so no one has messed with it at all and the last time I used it I did listen to a couple old shows and it worked fine).

I'm not too good at troubleshooting but I did find this in the logs:

DirectShowPlayerBase::playMusicFile(C:\GBPVR_Folders\Audio Files\Old Time Radio Shows\Fibber McGee and Molly 1940\400109_Gildersleeves_Suit.mp3)
2008-11-22 23:59:29.156 VERBOSE getSetting(PreferredAudioRenderer)
2008-11-22 23:59:29.156 VERBOSE audio renderer filter: Default DirectSound Device
2008-11-22 23:59:29.156 VERBOSE Using WM ASF Reader for .mp3 playback

Since it's using WM ASF Reader for mp3 playback and mp3 playback is also failing in Windows Media Player (though WMP will playavi and mpg video files fine, i don't have any other audio formats to try) I'd say my problem is with WM ASF Reader?

Yes you did say that sorry....

Yes very likely it is system related. How about downloading something like the mpa decoder from free codecs and set you audio decoder to that, and see if it clears your problem. The other option could be to find the wm asf reader and register it??

Also maybe a reinstall of WMP is in order.

I already use the MPA decoder and I've tried switching it anyway with no effect. Since it's set to MPA I dunno why it's using the WM ASF Filter, but I'm not sure how GBPVR handles mp3s, maybe it defaults to that no matter what.

I wasn't sure how/if I could re-register the WM ASF Filter as from what I gather it's actually a .dll file.

From what I gathered doing research on this it seems Windows Media Player is kinda buggy and it's part of the operating system so it's not easily removed / replaced / fixed. Wonderful . . . I finally decided to try and reinstall WM Player. I saw in the Windows Media Player directory there was a setup program so I ran it hoping it was the installer . . . it was an installer alright, but it called home and upgraded me from WMP 9 to WMP 11! Not sure if I wanted to do that or not, but it fixed my problem! Smile

Sooo, we'll keep our fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

TTYL,

Steve

The older I get the more set in my ways I get . . . ugh, change is bad! Big Grin

Actually I don't really use it for anything - I watch mpegs and avis through GBPVR so I just never updated it after I loaded the machine up (with XP Pro SP2, now SP3). I didn't know it could affect GBPVR like it did.

Thanks for the help, it was much appreciated!
