with ffdshow sometimes you have to enable the different types of media otherwise it wont be used(im sure you have already done this but thought it worth a mention)
also when you play them in XP what does graph edit say its using as a codec
can you save the graph then load it up in vista or check to see if you have the same codecs loaded on vista

Thank You Guys! I really appreciate all the suggestions and help!!!

OK, I believe I just found the problem!!!

This one REALLY annoys me!

The answer is . . . a bad flash drive!!!!

I was moving files from my XP machine to the HTPC via an 8gb flash drive. I can play the AVIs off of the flash drive in the XP machine (2 actually, one with XP Home and one with XP Pro on it) but not off the HTPC machine. I can read and write to it from the HTPC and it seems to work as the file size, etc. is OK. I found I had an old version of GSpot so I downloaded a new one and was going to scan the files for codecs as per the earlier request. When I scanned a file I took off the flash drive I got an error about a missing chunk. I scanned another and it couldn't even figure out what kind of file it was. I then deleted the files and took them off the flash drive again - again I got errors (different ones this time!) from GSpot. I then scanned the files on the flash drive it's self and again got errors.

I went over to the XP machine and out of eight files seven played and one didn't. When I scanned it it had errors. I pulled the files off of the flash drive to the XP machine and those files ended up with errors!

I just burnt (& verified!) a disc with various format files and popped it in the HTPC machine and EVERY one of them played fine!

Soooo, it looks like a bad flash drive. The XP machine is happier with the flash drive for some reason so it would play most of the files from the bad drive. The HTPC machine isn't happy at all with the flash drive (and the HTPC machine has no problem with the USB remote control interface and I can use a USB card reader to read pictures off of a SD card so I don't think there's any problems with the HTPC USB ports).

What a pain this has been! Oh well, so far I've been pretty happy with Vista so I'm glad I can continue to use it.

I actually have no idea what's loaded for codecs and stuff now as I was playing pretty heavily last night (and I was pretty tired) so I'm going to do a complete reinstall of Vista and then install the codec Sub suggested and see how the avis go, and then venture on to getting GBPVR and stuff back up and running.

THANKS again for all the GREAT help! It's much appreciated!!!

Take Care,

Steve

OK, got the thing reloaded with a clean install of Vista Ultimate, got the Xvid codec installed, got the PVR-150 driver installed, and got GBPVR installed and . . . the AVI playback in GBPVR works flawlessly! Smile

This is pretty slick!!!

Thanks sooooo much to Sub and everyone else who took the time to help me out, it was MUCH appreciated!

Steve
