This is what now works for me, sort of.
At the time of my last post, I did not have the Hauppauge MediaMVP software installed. The playback failed intermittently, in maybe one file out of ten, but the frequency varied a lot.

But the following plays files reliably, though only on one MVP at a time (I have two). I am using the latest GBPVR.exe (1.0.2337.12787) patch, though that may not be necessary.
(1) Install MediaMVP 3.0.24088
ftp.shspvr.com/download/mediamvp/mediamvp_3.0.24088.exe
(2) Leave the MVPMediaSvc service running on “automatic“, but set the MVPMedia service to “manual”.

I am now able to play both .mpg and DivX (.avi) files through GB-PVR much more reliably than before. The only glitches I see now are that when exiting from a file during playback, I sometimes can not get back to the main menu unless I punch the “Menu” button. Otherwise, I must restart MediaMVP. And when reconnecting to the server, I briefly get a “Failed to Locate GUI Server” message, but then it connects properly. And I can play only one MediaMVP at a time, even though I start up two servers in GBPVR. But when I exit one, the other one immediately becomes available.

Also, I am able to copy the dongle.bin from MediaMVP into the GBPVR dongle folder, and it seems to improve the menu response a little. This is something of a hybrid kludge, but it may be useful for troubleshooting purposes.

Whatever you do, dont do that. All sorts of stuff will be broken by doing this (ie, running half the GB-PVR software, half the Hauppauge software).

I'm starting to doubt that provided the correct file in the last patch. None of the logs that have been supplied contain the additional debug messages I've added.

You guys that supplied logs, how did you start your mvp servers? Automatically via the 'auto start servers' setting in the config app, or manually through the 'GB-PVR MVP Server' shortcut? The new log messages will only be generated when you're using the 'auto start servers' setting in the config app.

From my setup
<MVPServerAutostart>1</MVPServerAutostart>
To apply patch I
run "Stop Recording Service"
unzipped new file into place
run "Restart Recording Service"

The date stamp on the gbpvr.exe file now reads

I've rebuilt the file, and confirmed I'm seeing the messages with the new attached binary. Can you try these?

OK new patch file installed. Times:-
reboot PC.
22:04 MVP turned on from standby fine. Start watch recording, fine.
22:05 turn MPV into standby.
22:06 turn MVP on - sits at searching for servers.
22:07 turn MVP off.
22:08 shut down and zip up logs.

MVP services started automagically via config.

thanks
Martin

What firewall and antivirus software are you guys running? (if any)

Something is causing the TCP/IP sockets to behave differently on your machines than mine. I've tried on three machines here and have been able to reproduce anything like this problem.

Kerio 2.1.5 firewall
AVG antivirus v 7.1.394
Microsoft Antispyware 1.0.701
GBPVR running off drive E:
VMware NAT running in background.
Norton Ghost 9 running in background.
Microsoft Activesync 3.8.0 in background (PDA connection)
Sprite Backup running in background (PDA backup)

Tomorrow I'll backup my system, kill them all off and see if it makes any difference. I have to sneak off to kip now.

thanks again

Cheers for the info. We'll see what the others have to say. Hopefully there will a common theme between them all.
