LCD and plasma screens are a lot less forgiving than good old fashioned CRT TVs. A lot of analog signals look crap on them. A lot of it comes down to the quality of the TV's on board analog to digital conversion circuitry - ie, some of them turn blocks of similar colors into one color. The quality of the scaling that takes place at the same time also plays a big part.

How did the same MVP look on your old TV?

I know this doesnt really help, but just so you know - on my fujitsu plasma, the DVI picture from my PC looks worlds better than composite/svideo from the same machine.

I have a Panasonic 42 in HDTV.

The picture quality on my old set (A 35 in Sony CRT) with the same MVP is fantasic. I would say as good as or better than the built in tuner.

Don't get me wrong the picture is not unwatchable just noticably worse than my old set.

I am thinking about building a designated HTPC in the near future. When I do I plan on getting a graphics card with an HDMI jack.

Thanks,

Exactly my point above. Nothing wrong with the picture produced by the MVP, as evidenced by the decent picture on a regular CRT TV with the exact same MVP setup - the plasma and LCD TVs just dont tend to do as good a job with regular old analog content.

The problem is the source is blocky to begin with, at least in the case of Directv. Now, if you did a capture of a real DVD, and the MVP looked a lot worse, you would be correct.
