Is there a reason gbpvr would play some DVDs and not others? I can get a Thomas DVD to play for my son, but not a LoTR or Matrix DVD (it just sits on black screen).

I'm assuming it's just that the DVD player is the no-name POS it is, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a technical reason otherwise before I order a semi-decent one.

I know the Maxtrix one works from playing on the laptop, and it didn't work before I reinstalled my sys yesterday (w/ many changes, from mce to pro, less clutter of codecs, .0901 version, etc).

Good question. I just looked, but nothing on the box or disk seems to say.

I doubt it's a different region than any of the other ones. I just tried 2-3 more, older and new, and same nothing (and ones that are single/double sided). I did check and the player is Region 1.

I think this problem relates to tv-out and Macrovision. On my setup, PowerDVD by default won't play DVDs as it's complaining my tv-out isn't working correctly and GB-PVR (using PowerDVD to play) only displays a black screen.
I got around this by installing a program called DVDIdle. It somehow gets around the Macrovision protection and everything works great. I'm pretty sure there are other programs to do this as well (probably cheaper ones, maybe even free ones), but this one has worked great for me. (Note that the demo changes the audio track every few minutes.)
