I may have figured some of it out!!!!!

I am currently using the cyberlink mux, and it sometimes plays beautiful, and sometimes plays so bad you truely have no idea what is going on in the show.

the pattern is...
it plays good when it is not recording, but not so good if a recording is in progress.

this makes me think the drive cannot access fast enough for recording while playing HD.
is there a way around this??
the drive is SATA150

I don't know about the drive access. I would think it was more processing power then drive speed related. I never could get any decent HD performance unless I used dvr-ms.

Yeah, lots of US users find they have to use the DVR-MS mux since the Cyberlink one doesnt seem to cope well with HD content.

I'm having a similar issue. The mpg that is recorded with ATSC OTA is perfect. i don't know what you did on this last release sub, but it records with no stuttering and no problems. However, I am having to watch them in wmp instead of gbpvr(well actually pvrx2). The video is really choppy and then inevitably locks up. I am totally impressed with the improvements, but I would like to watch them in gbpvr to capitalize on comskip. ideas?

I dont know. I can only guess it relates to the decoders you're using. GB-PVR doesnt do the playback itself - instead it just delegates this to the directshow filters installed on your machine.

Switching to DVR-MS greatly increases the ability for it to play it back, but it typically crashes at least once. I'll attach logs to this message tomorrow when I get a chance.

Just thought I would throw my $0.02 in here...

My son was watching an HD program on the client when he came to me and said that he hit the remote button to skip the commercial when it "got all choppy".

I had seen this before and thankfully I came across this thread. The server started a recording at just about the time he hit the play button. We'll see if it is watchable after the recording has completed....

Note that I am recording using the Cyberlink mux. I had switched off the dvr-ms mux to attempt viewing while recording, now it seems that I cannot view *anything HD* while recording......

My wife keeps telling me to just plug the MVP back in and forget about it!

Unfortunately this is known limitation with the dvr-ms mux. These files cant be played from another machine while still recording. You'd have to talk to microsoft about this one - there is nothing I can do about this.

Of course -- I understand that limitation with the DVR-MS mux. That is why I recently switched to Cyberlink to do some testing.

My problem was that while my son was watching an HD recording on the client PC, a new recording started on the server (this one happened to be SD), but the playback was all choppy and not watchable. Again, my server is currently configured to use the Cyberlink Mux.

I'm not sure where the problem lies. There appeared to be plenty of bandwidth available, the disk light was not on (on the client PC anyways), and the CPU was nearly idle.

The only thing I can think of is that the server could not push enough data off of its hard disks due to excessive seeking (2x160GB in a software raid 0).
